Really? Did McGain even do much domestically? Never got why we hyped up all these spinners as the next Warne when they all averaged like 35 and up with the ball in the shield
35 was genuinely one of the better domestic averages for a spinner around the time McGain played. I mean obviously his Test went disasterously but he genuinely put in some decent performances for Victoria around that time period

All of this is secondary to the primary point, that being Zampa is not a red ball bowlers arsehole. McGain only came into this as Shady mentioned him

Sometimes the opposition plays well too. Rohit was great and the partnership in the last session was quality.

They had the two misses late but the bowling remained pretty good, albeit the spinners tired a bit late on. That’s credit to Sharma in particular and then the two not out blokes for cashing in.

Aus are a bowler short, especially when theyre playing two offies and two RFMs whose MO is basically the same (hit the deck on a length). Everyone knows Agar isn’t much chop but he really should have played here at seven and Carey at six with one of Renshaw or Handscomb missing out (given they were never dropping Warner like they should have).
Yeah Australia clearly a bowler short. No matter the pitch, you have to have 5 bowlers especially away from home.

This match is long over now. Time to think about the 2nd test XI

1. Handscomb (promoted to opener - need a right hander to open)
2. Khawaja
3. Labushagne
4. Smith(c)
5. Head
6. Carey
7. Agar(in a specialist batter- can bowl a few overs)
8. Starc
9. Murphy
10. Lance Morris
11. Mitch Swepson(purely as a wicket taking option - current bowlers not taking wickets)

Atleast here, we have some batting up to around no.8. Also the bowlers are in good form and are a lot quicker than Boland and Cummins- Starc and Morris bowl 145kph at least and can atleast swing the ball.

Warner's career is over, and Boland wont ever bowl in india again. Cummins 'rested' due to short 3 day turn around. Lyon dropped, hes not effective anymore v IND batters and hasnt been for many years.

Renshaw is dropped. That was a WTF selection, head being dropped for 1st test
Agreed 100%, hope this side is picked for the remaining Tests

Lyon having 460 test wickets is a crazy stat when you consider how often he’s bog average
He hasn't won it at a great average. He's averaging over 30 bowling in test cricket which is fairly ordinary. The average spikes when he plays away from home particularly eng and ind so that's why Aus can't win away. He's also super ordinary at home on flat pitches, see the scg test where he failed , and also the last BGT v India at home, he failed miserably

Yep. They need a couple of strike Bowlers and some wicket taking options. The above xi gives them 4 spin options including head . Also two sheer pace bowlers. They are going to lose regardless might as well try to get some wickets, and a bit more depth in batting , this test is an abject disaster and going to be one of the heaviest defeats in India.

Very disappointed in Lyon particularly. Indians totally have worked him out for many years. At 35 years old it seems he is done against any quality side

Feel also like they're lacking another bowling option. But then even when they batted the tail somehow looked long. Lol.
Issue with Murphy in there is, if they play him alongside Lyon, then the tail has to be a bit long with most pacers apart from Cummins and Starc not able to bat much.

The tail is far too long. its looking like a club side. 4 no.11's. did the selectors even consider that. Even SAF and a few lower ranked teams do not have such a long tail. Even a low ranked team like SAF would've fared better with the likes of left arm all rounder in Maharaj. NZ have fared better recently -drawing one game but losing another one majorly. This current aus team wouldnt even be able to draw a single game outside of weather related e.g. rain.

Another concern for Aus, is this is india's C team in terms of batting. and Aus are struggling massively to get them out. 5 of IND best batters are not in the XI - the in form Gill left out, keeper bat Kishan wasnt selected(hes their ODI keeper), Shreyas Iyer is injured, Pant is injured(car accident), and Sarfraz khan(who averages 80 in FC seasons recently) wasnt picked in the squad! Also leading strike bowler Bumrah is injured and he also bats!

Instead they got out of form KL Rahul, Pujara, kohli and untested Bharat...and they cant even get this team out.

as much as Dhoni disliked pace, Kohli seems to have equally poor outlook on spin for some reason
Such a contrast between him and Rohit playing spin. Kohli lunging out to meet the ball with hard hands, Rohit letting the ball come to him, rolling wrists over the ball to keep it down. The latter was the default technique of Indian batsmen against spin once upon a time.

Ha ha.. No way is this India's C team. Only Pant is missing. Bumrah is not missed much due to the conditions and how good Shami and Siraj are.

And Bumrah bats? Lol.

I’d like to see Kohli’s tbh. It’s criminal how many he’s spilled at slip. Genuinely one of the worst ever to consistently field there.
And he can't bat anymore. Turned to become a very ordinary batter in tests.
