I think he just genuinley doesn't know. He's too focused on his 'keeping to actually pay attention to fine edges or whether a batsman was struck in line or not.

Not sure this is always 100% true. I've seen wicket keepers missing a stumping chance while appealing for a very close catch. It's a simple example of not paying attention too much, actually paying off.
