Ishant Sharma has now played Australia in 20 Tests(!) and taken 45 wickets at 45.

Always seems to play against Australia an is usually an anonymous influence; are they still expecting him to repeat that spell he bowled to Ponting at Perth in 07/08?
Shami was injured. So he keeps getting chances.

Ah, the legendary Sharma spell. He only got three wickets in that match - RP Singh and Pathan had a lot more to do with the victory - yet that spell still seems to be the thing always brought up as evidence he can bowl against us. Heck, a couple of Indian members of my grade team waxed lyrical about it when some related subject came up a few weeks ago. It was nearly a decade ago, for Pete's sake!

Re: Mitch Marsh, it's amazing he's lasted this long as a Top 6 bat considering he's scored 1 half-century in his last 18 Tests.

I'll give him a bit of credit for his 2nd inns batting as it was a decent effort on this pitch and was in a handy partnership with Smith.

But the gushing and excuse-making constantly from Oz Comms on him (Clarke this Test) is exasperating. Keep pushing the argument that he needs to play his 'natural' game - maybe it's just that his natural game isn't good enough for a Top 6 bat.

Well, he hasn't really. He got dropped and then recalled.

I wouldn't have recalled him either (he did absolutely nothing to put himself back in the frame), but it's a bit rough to point out someone's long-term record one match after being recalled and ask why they haven't been dropped for it when they actually have.

It's Kohli & Ashwin.

1st fault was losing the toss. Kohli needed to win this crucial toss given India's history of playing c*** in the first Test of so many series, including at home. And Australia were prepared and India were not and were complacent. So toss was even more important. Bat first in relatively better conditions, score 280-300 and things fall into place because Australia have to play catch up. And you are more likely than not, to win.

2nd big mistake- taking the new ball when the old ball was reversing and when Australia had just been reduced to 205/9 due to the old ball.. What an illogical move it was. And to make matters worse Kohli took off Ashwin just so that Umesh could get a 5-fer! ****ing crazy. Altogether cost 50 runs as Starc got set and began hitting big.
Whats worse was that Australia learnt that batting aggressively could really work in these conditions, so in the 2nd innings we saw Aus batsmen playing far more attacking shots, in fact, Warner scored 10 off the 1st over itself before getting out. The lesson that Australia learnt from Starc could really help Australia ahead in this series.

3rd big mistake- Kohli throwing his wicket away, making it 44/3 and putting the middle to lower order under tremendous pressure because the big 3 had now got out (Vijay, Pujara and Kohli). Kohli's body language wasn't good at all when he came to bat and I literally felt he was gonna get out very soon and he did! And there are some games where just from his body language you can feel he's going to get a ton and he does. But this time, in fact, the whole game I didn't get a good vibe from him, that spark and determination was missing and it translated into more and more mistakes as captain.

4th screw up- Losing 3 wickets in an over to SOK and then the lower order simply panicking.. Losing 7 wickets for 10 runs is the No.1 reason India have lost the game. The game was now effectively over as a contest. A miracle was required because Aus were always going to score 140-150 at least, and that would take the target beyond 300.. making it pretty impossible to chase.

5th screw up- Dropping catches especially of Smith, and wasting reviews and not able to review when out. This ensured that Target would be beyond 400 .i.e. not possible even if India bat twice.

6th- Ashwin was well below par, and he looked poor vs right handers. Jayant was terrible against all and would leak runs every over.

7th- This was a tailor made pitch for Jadeja but despite repeatedly missing the edge, he kept looking for it. Instead, he shouldve bowled straight more often. He needed to stop going a little wide everytime a batsman was successful in defending straight. Aus had a clear plan where they didn't mind missing the outside edge. They wanted to keep lbw away, but Jadeja by bowling straighter and with variation could've brought everything into play. He didn't need to spin it much, just a little. Poor awareness from him. Got carried away with the assistance that the pitch had.

8th- Mentally shot by the time Ind came to bat again and so got rolled for 100 once more. Had not seen Sok before the game and didn't have a clue why his balls weren't spinning. They basically got Jadeja'd by Sok, and didn't have any game plan to keep out his straighter ones. They learned nothing from 1st innings, which highlights the **** backroom staff they have who notice nothing. And the fact that India looked so unprepared shows their complacency and sh**iness of the sports staff once again.. Bcci really need to invest in this.. In contrast, Aus did everything they could to prepare for India. Amazing preparation. And hardwork pays off in terms of luck & performance. Sok fine example of hardwork he did to get set for the tour where he skipped part of big bash. And Monty has done well to assist him.

Such a great win.

Renshaw is the man and has now earned himself a permanent place for the foreseeable future.

Smith just gets runs. It's what he does. Even if the opposition have to give him six lives.

O'Keefe is everything we had hoped on Indian pitches. Seriously WAG. I think literally everyone loves that he made Warne taste it so badly.

Starc is the man. His batting and bowling were both vital this test.

Lyon was very good and so was Hazlewood. Very good bowling from the whole team and despite O'Keefe taking 12, all of the other bowlers played a key role.

I like how the post went from fault to big mistake to screw up to mentally shot

This was the worst capitulation from an Indian side I can ever remember. They were beaten mentally. Also, ive never seen Indian batsmen do so terribly against spin, let alone back to back - that was embarrassing. The closest thing was when India got Mendis'ed in Sri Lanka, but that was more excusable as he was new and very different so it took a while to figure him out.

Just caught up with the highlights.

1) I don't doubt for a second that the preparation they did in the UAE went a long way in winning the match. There was a pitch map graphic at one point that showed similarities between Lyon/O'Keefe and the Indian spinners. They haven't just decided to bowl a certain way, rocked up and done it. Quality preparation was key. Excellent to see and I hope sides start to learn. Recall Pakistan's prep before they toured England and India's before they went to SA.

2) SOK is the man. Never even watched the bloke bowl much but I've always maintained that in a competition like the SS you can't ignore figures like his. People who used to talk him down are tasting hard.

3) I hope we don't panic and drop Rahul and Rahane. Jayant for Nair sounds ok. In hindsight on this wicket the 5th bowler was a waste, batting was more important.

4) Lyon bowled quite well I thought in the first innings, credit to him. Didn't see much of the second but it appears he was picking up the scraps after O'Keefe dined on the Indians, in very typical Lyon fashion. Downhill skiier. Still a good bowler but **** him.

5) hahahahahahahahahah shane warne

Honest question to RANDIs: Can anyone remember a home defeat this bad? I can't think of a single one.
2012 vs England. These are just a bunch of nobodies(yet) getting owned. It was more difficult to watch Sachin progressively get worse as the series went on. We have been shocked pretty bad here but I am still optimistic and looking forward to how we come back in the next game. But yeah, this will suck more if we lose a test again in this series in a few weeks.

Nah, I'm talking one individual test loss. We didn't get pasted like this virtually from beginning to end in a single game in 2012. Plus, that was a team on the decline.

New Zealand made us collapse a couple of times at home, didn't they? I mean, Harbhajan scored a hundred and bailed us out but home collapses are not something new to us.

Yea this unfortunately has to be the most humiliating defeat in a test match at home over the last 2-3 decades.

Think Lehmann can write himself down as doubly pleased over this, can lose the series now and still retain his job with the feather of finally actually doing something in the SC in his cap.
