This whole thing is f'ing hilarious, however it's so ridiculous that i suppose it must be considered that it has been manufactured deliberately. I mean, let's face it, all of these four players probably had a pretty good reason for not approaching the exercise seriously. Two were out of the team and so would probably have been loathe to complete the exercise when to do it honestly would have looked transparently looked like an exercise in self-promotion. Watson we know has his own issues about his place in the team, and Pattinson would have struggled to avoid being abusive about the efforts of every other bowler in the team. So given the realistic choice about paying lip-service to the task and not doing it at all, it's hardly surprising they opted for the latter option. Especially if they weren't made aware of the consequences.

On the other hand, Watson was going to disrupt the team by flying home anyway, the availability of Khawaja and Johnson was making team replacements almost obligatory to satisfy a baying public, even if the team management were in disagreement, and finally, having played two matches in a row, Pattinson was long overdue an injury timeout....

I doubt Bob Simpson or Allan Border suffered fools.

They might not have got the side to participate in an inane exercise but you can bet your arse that a player disregarding the coach's wishes would have been out on their arse.
One thing I'll give Arthur is that he fronted the press straight away. Back in the day, if Simpson didn't approve of you, you were quietly excised from the squad then quietly black-listed (possibly for the rest of your career) with no communication from him.

Please provide feedback on which aspects of CW posting haven't been going well over the last 24 hours, bearing in mind your failure to do so could have consequences.
You are gonna have to wait for the results of the survey...

Has there ever been such crap treatment of a vice captain as there has been with Watson since Uncle Arthur took over?

Prior to Arthur being appointed, Watson was averaging 44 as opener, and contibuting handily as a change bowler

Since Arthur's appointment:

- Watson was pushed down from his preferred spot (for Ed Cowan of all people, he who averages 31)

- Management said at the start of this summer that there are doubts as to whether he is in the top six bats in the country (Ed though comfortably is, despite averaging 13 less in the same spot)

- He was pushed down the order because Arthur wanted to turn him into a Jacques Kallis (this despite Watson's body be incapable of handling such a bowling load)

- He reported soreness after Hobart (where he was massively over bowled) but was made to play in Melbourne (where he broke down)

- He is now dropped over a minor infraction

I'm late to the party, but they deserved to be axed.

It's pretty simple...when the team is in disarray and the coach and captain ask you to dig deep and come up with just 3 ways in which you and the team can improve, allowing you 4 days to complete the task, and you can't do it then get ****ed.

They all had pissweak excuses as to why they hadn't done this simple task but the reality is the other 12 guys did it with no issue.

IMO Brydon Coverdale nailed it on this issue:

"Maybe Saturday night comes around and you haven't got back to the coach. But guess what, 12 of your team-mates have. They've been thinking about how the group can improve. Have you?

Perhaps you have no ideas. Then why not come to the coach and tell him that? You're back at training on Sunday. If you haven't been thinking about cricket over the past few days, you damn well should be now.

Maybe you just forgot. But if you forgot, how switched on are you? This is the only thing you've had to do and you haven't done it. Where is your head at? Not in the space it needs to be to play a Test, clearly."

They are in the squad and Arthur thinks this is soccer so it's the same sort of squad game. Even though they haven't actually played.

Pick me and find out was the simple answer for those 2.

Yes Arthur's the boss but you can only expect respect if you earn it. Its hard to get respect and players following instructions if you are going to set them stupid tasks and sack them for not doing it bcos they don't rate what your setting. He is the coach not Pharaoh. Yes you expect orders to be followed but ffs make them sensible and meaningful.Otherwise you get treated with contempt and may even lose your own job to those to whom you are responsible. (Which I think he should).

I also think this decn is standalone stupid and not some straw that broke the camel's back. If Arthur was unhappy with attitude then guys like Usman should've been picked only over his dead body. With a resignation note stapled to his forehead. So I can only assume that he was happy with the tude right up until now. Well bugger me then if this decn doesn't qualify as the most massive over reaction in player management. Even beats Ponting arguing on field with Brett Lee.
With the exception of Michael Clarke not one of the players is in a position where the coach should have to earn their respect.

These would be valid points except:

Watson's average as an opener is largely down to performances against rubbish West Indies and Pakistan attacks in 2009
Watson averaged 19(Spikey to confirm, its something rubbish anyway) as an opener post Ashes
He wasn't pushed down, he was replaced by Hughes because his crap body broke down again. Ed Cowan came in for Hughes after Hughes spent the entire New Zealand series nicking to Maetin Guptill.
Cowan's initial performances as an opener, whilst not amazing, were much better than anything Watson had contributed for a year.
You're against rotation so surely resting Watson for Melbourne would have caused Shane to cry with all the insecurity
Arthur wanted Watson to bowl more because it was the only thing he was doing well

What the **** else were they meant to do when they had internationals against the West Indies and warm ups in India scheduled simultaneously.

A Theory

Ponting and Hussey retire leaving a void in senior pros. Watson and Johnson are now senior pro's in terms of age and experience but neither are strong characters. Clarke and Arthur put in place review system for the players for the series as the squad is young and lacking guidance from senior pros. This draws ire from the senior players remaining(watson and johnson) who resent the instructions having played 40+ tests. Potentially lead astray/ give off bad attitude to rest of the squad which festers. Pattinson and Khawaja need little encouragement to show poor attitude. Pattinson is pissed having put his heart in to the series; Khawaja poor attitude in general.

Basically you need experienced, respected senior pros in place in tough tours like this and Watson and Johnson aren't these guys. Losing Ponting and Hussey has been massive with few players left to show an example/ guide the players.
