Strauss is not even in the same league as either Ponting or Hussey and had been weighing England down...his retirement actually enhanced the team not weakened it.
Over Ponting's career you may have a point, but not so much on the last couple of years.

But ironically enough Khawaja has the same glaring problem as Watson - the inability to rotate strike/relieve pressure if the bowling is decent. Cowan at least has the tools to absorb it (usually, provided he puts his ****ing cover drive away).

Twatto's been a problem since he lost his opening spot through injury - not because of his position in the order, but because he doesn't look like scoring any bloody runs. You could deal with it to an extent when he was chipping in with vital wickets (like in South Africa) and we had the lower order strength of Hussey making runs for fun, but now that he's the only other experienced batsman in the side, it is concerning.

But if you drop him, you lose that experience.

IMO George Bailey wouldn't be too bad a fix if Clarke bites the bullet and moves up the order. Domestic cricket's most Hussey-like batsman in his approach to the game.
Bailey has the same problem as Ferguson, Paine, Dussey and Peter Forrest - no shield form.

150 up! He's so going to end up with such a gun record, especially in India.

Flibb made a completely valid point tbh. He said the batting is currently woeful, what's the point of bringing up Ponting and Hussey? Dragging England into it just because he supports them is also pretty dire.
I just amended my last post to reiterate my overarching point...that Australia are reeling from the shock loss of two titans so it's obvious they are going to struggle to replace them short term.

IMO the example of England is valid...any team which suddenly lost two gun veteran batsmen unexpectedly would see their performances nosedive. Geez if SA lost Kallis and Amla out of nowhere are you telling me they wouldnt be way more vulnerable.

I'm jyst trying to bring some perspective to the current situation.

*** Ok my original post has now been lost in context (it was a response to one particular post) and is now being misinterpeted as some sort of apology for our poor performance. I'm not defending the crap selections or performances here. I'm reacting to a post suggesting we were facing an entire era of being crap. IMO we are not and in any case, 1 and a half Tests post Hussey it is WAY to early to tell.****

Gun record in India - YES

As for the rest of the world lets wait and see him play a few tests first.
Confident Pujara will do well overseas as well. He has plundered runs on A tours mostly, including the India A tour to England where he was head and shoulders above all other batsman against decent attacks from the Windies and England.

Vijay on the other hand........

Really doubt that Gavaskar. Pretty sure if a wicket falls now Sachin would send a night watchman in.
