Only been watching for 20 minutes but Aus have done great to reach lunch with 0 wickets down. If Bhaji catches a break, he could run through them going by the turn and bounce he is getting.

I don't think the turn will last for too much longer...

Think we'll post about 0/250 by tea. Katich will probably throw his wicket away as normal and North will come in as night watchman

0/319 at stumps, hopefully! -

Watson to do a Taylor and end up on 219, Katich to make 138 ala Geoff Marsh.

But more realistically we'll be 6/264 at stumps. :@
It all depends on Ponting. If Ponting can come in, once Watson or Katich falls, and avoid getting out before say 30 runs, then I think Aus will get a big (450+) first innings score. However, if Ponting does get out quickly, then the situation is all too familiar, and I would expect a batting collapse...

Ponting and Clarke. Generally speaking the performance of those two dictates how we do in the innings. One/both of them getting hundred generally leads to 400+.

I just hope we can get through one test match, our first in donkeys' years, without a collapse.

I don't think we missed out on any opportunities due to Dhoni's field placements TBH, the batting from these two was just too good. There weren't any balls going in the air where close-in fielders should be, etc. Hardly created any wicket-taking opportunities at all in that session, credit to Australia.

Still utterly defensive in a session that offered quite a bit to the bowlers and didn't apply any pressure to the batsmen.

Perhaps not but the field settings didn't exactly help the bowlers put pressure on. Good batting or not it's still much too defensive captaincy for the 1st session on a track giving the bowlers good assistance.

Yeh but these days Clarke seems inclined to do only as Ponting does. If Ponting falls I would expect Clarke to aswell. And vice versa if Ponting scores.

Agree with many of the comments. Day 1, session 1 is not the time to drop the field back. Pressure is such a critical aspect of bowling, keep a batsman on strike and he is more likely to play a rash shot. Not smart captaincy, and it's a shame because most captains adopt the same tactic in modern times.
