*Official* Australia in England

Australia dropped from No.1 to No.4 in test rankings in a span of just over a year iirc. If that is not a huge drop, I don't know what is.
Those are just numbers. There wasn't much between the top 4. The same South Africa that took the home series in OZ lost the return series, India lost here then annihilated OZ at home, England were killed in 06/07 then beat OZ relatively comfortably at home. They've all pretty much taken a series off each other.

I enjoyed it, tbh. The first Test was quite competitive but good cricket is good cricket and, especially with the bat, India were great. But yeah, OZ didn't look competitive in general. They were bad enough that any team probably would've have challenged them but because it was in India, at least they could hide behind 'we always get schtonkered in India'. :p

Cricket-wise, Mohali was the worst I thought. Nagpur was embarrassing, though, and it wasn't because they played poor cricket.

I don't want to comment on Ind-Aus series in Aus. It will open a can of worms
England lost Ashes in Aus because that side had the ATGs like Warne/McGrath etc
I agree wrt South Africa.

The rankings are not just numbers, but numerical representation of their performances. Australia used to have a lead as wide as Ashraful's bat and pad but now they are number 3. To say they are "near to their best" has no substance because that means they are pummeling their opposition and not competing hard as they are now against even top oppositions.

Yar, re-building without a huge drop in performances in Tests (they've remained pretty competitive against most teams) is a decent effort. OZ took at least 7 years after Chappell/Marsh/Lillee retired to return to being really competitive, WI have been re-building for at least 10 years now and they're still not showing any great signs. South Africa took, what, 5 years after Donald/Polly retired? India's rebuilding once Dravid/Laxman/Tendulkar go will take quite some time too and I reckon they'll see more than a minor dip in Test wins.

3 years sounds like a long time but in reality it's a blip on a Test team's history and they've still been a solid team through that time..
Sorry to quote the same post again. But South Africa never really dipped even after Donald left did they? I can't recollect them losing big series apart from Australia. And I don't think they ever had drops like to no.4 and all. (Please correct me if they indeed had)

They never really were at the top either though.

No idea about SA's rankings (they might have actually dropped below 4 at one point) but I do remember from 2000 until the mid/late 00's, they weren't great. Lost away to SL a couple of times, away to India, lost every series against OZ and one to England at home, might have even lost in Pakistan (?).

EDIT: Just remember they drew in England against a really average bowling attack too, around the time McGrath was considered an allrounder.....

Regardless of where they've been recently, looking at their group of younger players - Smith, Hilfenhaus, Hughes, Paine, Hazlewood, Khawaja, Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Starc, Ferguson, as well as their senior players who will have a fair bit left in them in Johnson, Watson, Clarke, Bollinger - it probably won't be long before they are number 1 again.

In the immediate future however, we have an opportunity to put a period of success together against them, and this year's Ashes series will be our best chance in the past 20 years (and probably for the next 20) to beat them at home.

Oh fine, they are now no.3.
**** I wish you were around anytime between CW's launch and 2007.

Honestly, the pile of **** you carry on with when you're side's been on top for a New York minute, and ftr has a bowling attack beginning to look as though it may well be ordinary away from home (Zaheer injury concerns, Sharma off the boil etc) is beyond belief.

Honestly, come here, win a test series at least once in your history, and get back to us.

Jesus Christ, I gave you the benefit of the doubt for yonks but you're nothing but a troll of the worst kind - you try to give yourself this patina of legitimacy every now and again, but you just cannot help yourself, no matter what guise you're in. It's dire.

Sad thing is, you say some pretty decent things on occasion, and I by no means think you're a fool, but it's like sorting through a 60 foot high pile of **** to extract a gold earring. Sure what you're looking for might be valuable, but it's easier to just ignore it and go and buy another, even if it costs you.

Just awful, awful stuff.

Oh, and LOL Gelman.

Burgey and Gelman, please cut out the personal insults. Play the post, not the poster.

 Burgey's post had me in splits. I don't know why are you carrying your fanship on your sleeve. Why are you getting worked up if someone says legit stuff against your team? I didn't say Australia are Bangladesh or something. I just disagreed with Andyc's post.

I always think people resort to attacking the poster when they don't have points to argue. It is pathetic someone like you opt for This. If you don't like what am saying please ignore it, or report it. Freedom of speech as guaranteed by this forum doesn't mean you can pour vitriol like This. I don't come here for anyone's certification to be very honest. I come here because I like the discussions, the posters' knowledge. I have a job which is fairly extracting, and other issues to attend to as well, like any of you. I don't get any satisfaction from riling up anyone.
