Well this beanpole bowler you have was bowling at 90mph by all accounts and Bairstow and co were sending him out of the ground!

It is not as if the West Indies in the pomp were an unbeatable machine either, case in point the 83 and 87 world cups. England beat them in 9/10 one-dayers between 1986 and 1988, in competitions like the Benson and Hedges and Texaco cups, and not many people regard England of that period as ''one of the great one-dayer sides''.
It’s pretty brave to be making comparisons between a side which won two WCs and was regarded as the preeminent one day side for over decade with a team which is yet to win a thing aside from bilateral ODI series over two years. This England side hasn’t won any meaningful one day tourney at all yet. People were saying how great the SA ODI side was in the lead up to the 99 WC, and they’re now a footnote in history.

I picked their ‘79 team at random

Roberts, Holding, Garner, Croft, Richards, Greenidge and Haynes at their peak

Complete mismatch

Stanlake is a very talented bowler but he’s a fragile novice and can’t be compared to those guys

lol yeah Stanlake has played 9 List A matches in his life (4 of them ODIs). And 2 First-class matches.

Using him as an example is pretty dumb

Why is there this much hullabaloo about an ODI series? No wonder they say test cricket is dying
Partly 1) England fans having something to cheer about. but more so:
2) Everyone with a grudge against Australia coming out of the woodwork

The fact that it's a half strength side in a meaningless series doesn't matter

There isn't... single poster really; combined with absolute boredom with the lack of true quality, interesting cricket for most of the rest of us..... I'm even occasionally watching 10min of football. How desperate do I have to be?

Yeah. It's a pity that a gripping test series underway goes under the radar for most cricket fans,
I`ve been watching that as well.... but not on right now? Enjoyed the last match in particular, with SA's tour of SL coming up.

No... he is a minnow basher that gave up on his country to play IPL....
Tells me all i need to know.

This thread overall is one of my favorites ever, posters from inferior and irrelevant teams (NZ for e.g) coming in to cry about England and attempt to mock the Aussies. Great scenes.

Well you guys selected him!

The moral of the story being, don't select crappy players then!

This is a bit like an Englishman losing a test series and saying afterwards, ''yes but we had James Vince and Jake Ball so it doesn't really count''.

England are ahead of the game.

We've also capitalised on the success of Ed Sheeren by fast tracking red heads into the team.

What a beautiful cricket nation we are.

England should have the fear of god when the convicts pick this chap then,

What are you on about, you're the one who was comparing him to Holding, Garner and co.
