Stiff as a board but as soon as Stokes is fit, Hales comes out for mine and I think that's what'll happen. Roy and Bairstow are solid at the top together, hard enough to find, and although a special knock, Hales was battling to get in the side on form. Root at 3 is the best fit for him and the overall team consistency with a WC coming. When Hales comes off, sure, manic **** like yesterday happens but he doesn't come off enough to plan for it, one feels. And if both he and one of the openers doesn't tee off, that puts Root and Ali under a lot of pressure, as we saw when they couldn't get going at the end of the innings there. Stokes, of course, gives you a lot of options with bat, ball and in the field and is talismanic in a way that the others aren't, can change tempo, etc.
That said, jesus you're busting a gut to find any proper weaknesses no matter who you choose. Hales weakens the consistency only a little and the guys down the order are ****ing masters at regaining the initiative. Loved every minute of the absolute monstering the top-3 gave the Aussies. Even if none of the top-4 come off, you've gotta deal with Buttler and Morgan - nightmare. Brilliant problem for the England selectors to have to fit some of the most destructive ODI bats around into the same team.
