Dauth out; Kerr in the frame
After a series of mediocre performances, middle order batsman Rob Dauth has been dropped for the first Test against Australia. And now Cricket Web Colts batsman Will Kerr is set to make his Test debut, while Dan Smith narrowly misses out again. Kerr has been prolific for the past three seasons, and will get the chance to show whether he can step up to the top level against the best in the world.
His Colts teammate, Greg Thomas has been retained to play the first Test, as part of a 4-man seam attack. And despite his struggles this season, Neil Pickup has been retained as sole spinner and captain and will hope to turn his fortunes around at Fardin Qayyumi CC.

Ponting dazzles between the showers
1st Test - Day 1 - Fardin Qayyumi CC
Rain threatened to ruin the opening day of Australia's Test series against Cricket Web XI. But when all was said and done, it was a Ricky Ponting century that stole the headlines and ruined the mood of the Cricket Web collective. The Australian captain was not flawless, but still dominant and peppered the boundary on both sides of the pitch with 14 fours. By the day's end he had scored 113 unbeaten and was engaged in a stand of 32 with Mike Hussey (20 not out).

The start of the day was delayed by rain and brought an early lunch. But when things finally kicked off, the Webbers started well with the ball. Demeza almost had Simon Katich caught at third slip, but debutant Will Kerr failed to hold the difficult chance to his left. Greg Thomas pushed through a bouncer that caught Matthew Hayden (2) offguard, and he skied a catch to fine leg. A brief recovery was interrupted by another long stoppage for rain, and on the resumption Cricket Web XI wasted some of their best chances. Indeed, Katich was twice dropped in 7 overs until tea. Ponting cruised past 50 in the final session and then saw his partner dropped for a fourth time, by Young in the slips.
The misery continued for the Webbers and it was the turn of Ponting to be let off, first on 76 and then on 80. Katich escaped once more before his luck ran out, and Mamesh collected a catch at second slip. The opener walked away for 72 and CW XI were left with 45 minutes to attack the new batsman, Hussey. The Australians gathered themselves well, however, and did not put a foot out of place en route to 225-2.

Centurion Symonds drives Australia forward
1st Test - Day 2 - Fardin Qayyumi CC
Cricket Web XI started day two well, but by the evening Australia had assumed a dominant position. The performance was masterminded by allrounder Andrew Symonds, who was unusually reserved with a 149-ball ton. The morning session brought 3 wickets for the Webbers, starting with Ricky Ponting for 127. The Aussie captain played on to Greg Thomas with the old ball and a partnership of 83 was ended for the third wicket.
The following over Borcich struck from around the wicket and pegged back the offstump to send Mike Hussey off for 54. From 276-2 Australia had slipped to 277-4 and threatened an uncharacteristic collapse. But for all the firepower of the Webber attack, they could not further unsettle the tourists, even armed with the new ball, and the sixth wicket did not fall until the final ball before lunch. It was Michael Clarke (25), out flicking uppishly to Demeza at square leg.

A fired-up unit started bowling at two new batsmen in the second session, but after a couple of early alarms, including a close lbw shout against Symonds, the batsmen settled into stride. Running between the wickets was central to the partnership, which crossed 100 in the 121st over. At tea Symonds had scored 90 and Brad Haddin had 52. The wicketless session ended with Australia on 461-5. The highlight of the evening session was Andrew Symonds hundred. He brought it up with the style of a four followed by an enormous six over cover. Demeza stood amazed at the shot and Symonds was not short of words to complement it.
Both batsmen were out in quick succession after Australia had crossed 500, so Brett Lee took the opportunity to take advantage of tired bowlers toward the end of the day. Lee issued a flurry of 5 fours and a flat pull for six in a cameo knock of 40. And after his demise Stuart Clark added the ultimate insult, dropped twice on his way to 27 and a team total of 605 all out. In the one over left, Mørk eased Lee behind point for a boundary, but Cricket Web XI ended trailing by 599 runs with three days left to play.

CW XI crawl on as Mørk stands tall

A brave and typically reserved hundred from Håkon Mørk kept Cricket Web XI in the hunt for the follow-on target on day three. The Webbers crept along at 2.86 runs per over and closed the gap to 327 runs with six still left to bat. Mørk scored 123 not out and during his 330-ball stay at the crease, his only error saw him beaten outside offstump by Brett Lee in the second over of the day.
His opening partner Thamba Mamesh only got as far as 14 before he was struck on his toe by Lee and sent on his way. Haddin missed a difficult chance behind the stumps to reprieve Pete Young, but with 21 to his name he was deceived by flight of Michael Clarke and was caught at midoff. Indeed, Clarke went on to be the best bowler on show for Australia and added Andrew Cloete as a high profile second wicket in the final session. By then Cloete had scored 83, and a stunning catch by Andrew Symonds completed his dismissal. The big man threw himself to the right to take the catch one-handed at backward point.

It crucially broke a partnership of 169 runs and kept Australia on top, when Chris Butler took guard in sparkling form. The left-hander looked shaky, however, and stumps could hardly come fast enough as he faced up to Lee. The fast bowler mixed full and short deliveries at well over 90 miles per hour, and Butler survived several close calls involving the outside and inside edge, and most notably his front pad. A close lbw shout was turned down and kept Lee with just the one wicket on the day. At his end Mørk was entirely defiant and right behind the ball, setting up for a big innings on day four, or so Cricket Web XI hope.

Brave Webbers avoid follow-on
1st Test - Day 4 - Fardin Qayyumi CC
The scenes were out of a storybook when comeback hero Greg Thomas hit Lee for four to save the follow-on for Cricket Web XI. Thomas, his Test career reborn, scored 12 absolutely crucial runs to tick past the required 406. Much of the hard work was done by Mørk before him, but after the opener fell for 160, CW XI still required 16 to ensure that Australia would bat again with five sessions left in the match.

The morning session definitely belonged to Australia. Chris Butler looked a bit more confident than the night before, but only scored 20 when Stuart Clark got him caught in the gully. In came Will Kerr, the surprise debutant. His first challenge was to face Clark and he did so with a single to open his international account. He was not so lucky against Lee, however, and misjudged a quick delivery that smashed into his front pad. Kerr had not played a shot so the umpire wasted little time in raising the deadly finger. A poor period almost got worse as Wilson was dropped by Hayden, though Mitchell Johnson ultimately chipped in with his wicket for 20.
Mørk, the proverbial cheese, looked likely to stand alone. CW XI slumped further into trouble with the loss of Nick Borcich and went to lunch on 356-7. Australia returned to the field with grand plans of knocking over the tail and possibly enforcing the follow-on. Instead they were frustrated by both Mørk and CW XI captain Neil Pickup. The latter was once a batsman worthy of ridicule, but supplied important support and hit Lee for 3 boundaries in dominating a stand of 35. In fact it was Mørk who was first out of the duo, attempting to chip the ball over midoff. He failed to clear the fielder and was out for 160. Pickup was next out for 20 and CW XI were still 5 short of the follow-on target. A single and a pre-meditated blow over point later, they had achieved their first goal.
Thomas was then a maiden Test wicket for Bryce McGain, so Australia started their second innings with a session left on day four and in the lead by 197. Quick runs were certainly required and achieved by a rampant opening stand. Katich survived a close lbw shout and Hayden was dropped at midwicket, but caution was still not the order of the innings. Borcich was roughed up the most of the Webbers seamers and conceeded three sixes to Katich. The opener hit 4 in total and reached 57. Wilson took his wicket with a slower ball and a good low catch, and Ponting and Hayden firmed up the innings to 147-1 at the close.

Cricket Web XI reached lunch with all 10 second innings wickets intact, chasing 389 for a highly unlikely first Test win. The massive target was comfortably topped off by Australia in the morning. They batted for just 10 overs and scored 44 runs and put the game out of the reach of the home side. Matthew Hayden made the selfless gesture of walking off without an argument, stuck on 93 when Ricky Ponting declared the innings closed. That he did not reach his hundred was largely his fault, in fact, as he laboured to get going and scored just 14 runs from the 34 balls he saw.
The field was pushed right back and the Webbers bowled defensive lines in their attempts to keep Australia close. Still Ponting managed to tick along at a run-a-ball until he dragged a flat Pickup delivery onto middle stump. Upon his demise Ponting declared and left a maximum of 83 overs in the match to defend 389. His victory charge would have received a big boost but for the inside edge of the bat that saved Thamba Mamesh. He went on to play in typically aggressive fashion and was dropped by McGain in the covers. He whipped the disappointed Johnson over midwicket for six and advanced to the break unbeaten on 42.

Mørk solid as Webbers search for draw

Håkon Mørk passed 200 runs for the match and set Cricket Web XI up for a draw with his second venture past 50. In addition to his first innings 160, Mørk went to tea unbeaten on 64 and with CW XI placed strongly on 174-1. Thamba Mamesh was the only wicket to fall in the session, caught at slip off McGain for 74. The legspinner celebrated the wicket with as much vigor as his first and the Webbers experienced their first sign of worry. Admittedly he should have done better, but dropped a return catch that would have dealt for Mørk on 32.
The missed chance haunted Australia and Mørk brought up his 50 with a firm cut shot against Lee. At his side Pete Young was as good as he needed to be, and ******ed Mørk to tea with 28.
