*Official* Australia A in England 2019

I ask this question in some way or another most seasons.. Just say the English quicks are bowling very well in conditions that suit, what would be your pecking order in terms of Aussie bats surviving a session?

khawaja is a shout for 3rd if it's pitched up. he can be very, very conservative on the drive (mainly in his early years - he might be more expansive now) which would bode well for him on a greenie.

Smith is the class Australian batsman, he must be the most likely to survive a session in any conditions against any bowling.

Warner is very good but probably would be troubled by good bowling with a swinging ball.

After that the Australia batting line up is very weak. Khawaja is a test match batsman, but not a very good one. The rest of the team are not proven to be test quality, some have promise but that is unfilled. With England also struggling for quality batsmen apart from Root it really could be a test series where 200-250 is a match wining score if the bowlers can bowl well. It seems in both countries talented batsmen are not developing the skills to be good test match batsmen. I wonder why that might be.

As for Australia's second opener.
Harris started the summer looking good in tests without making any big scores and then seemed to fade away over the summer and looked certain to be dropped after the Sri Lanka series. Burns scoring 180 seemed to confirm it with Warner coming back in. However the Sri Lanka attacked bowled poorly and was injury hit so Burns 180 was a good but not brilliant innings. After that Burns struggled in Shield cricket while Harris dominated the whole season and scored an impressive century in the Shield final. Burns has then had heath issues and even though he is over them and scored a century for Australia A like Harris it is not clear whether he would be picked ahead of Harris like most thought after the last Sri Lanka test.
Bancroft is a bit behind both of them in my view but maybe he is a chance if Burns and Harris struggle in the last two lead up games and Bancroft is impressive in the Australians Australia A match.
Burns could play other than an opener at 3,5 or 6 if required especially if Khawaja is not fit. Whether that might lead to all four openers being picked in the squad is questionable.

Smith Khawaja Warner Bancroft Patterson Paine Harris Labuschagne Carey Burns Head Cummins is my order.

I didnt consider Shaun Marsh as I cant see how we would go back to him, I did include Mitch Marsh who isnt good to enough to crack the top 12.

Am I foolish putting Carey ahead of Burns and Test vice captain Head who is clearly the superior batsman than his SACA teammate.. I dont think so haha.

Okay cool. We have worked out that Steve Smith should play.. How about the other 12 or so bats?
I'm far from an expert on batting technique but after Smith I would probably say something like 2. Khawaja 3. Warner 4. KPat 5. Marnus 6. Burns 7. Bancroft 8. Head 9. Harris

I am very curious about marnus v burns v bancroft. Since they are battling it out for second best RH pure bat.

One of them could make the team just because you might not want Smith and 5 left handers.

I am not sure it matters. They can all form a left right combination with Smith if they bat with Smith which might ever so slightly help Smith and them.

Mitch Marsh is in the Australia A team. Such stupidity makes me want to cry.

Team is Harris, Burns, Patterson, Head, Wade, M Marsh, Paine, Neser, Tremain, Bird, Holland.

No Pucovski and no Handscomb as well as no Pattinson and Hazlewood.

You just know Mitch marsh will ton up because that's what he does in first class games.

Yeah, I find it incredible that Carey is currently being talked about as a top 6 batsman just because he did well in a few ODI's.

Funny that he's not being talked about a replacing Paine though so I guess they don't rate his glove work yet

Well your choices for captain if Paine was dropped are between a player who is currently injured, a brand new keeper, a bowler (none of whom have shown any extraordinary cricketing intelligence) or a batsman fighting for his place.
