One of the things I noticed is that even though the England bowlers haven't bowled super this morning, none of the batsman have looked really setled.

However as I type Matty Hayden just hit a Pull/Hook of a no-ball to bring up his 50 (65 balls 7x4's).

And takes the Aussies to 111/1

I think considering that Robert Key was in quite attacking form during the warm-ups that he should come in for John Crawley in the next test, its the only way England have a hope of beating Australia..you can't have batsmen who bat all day for 40 or 50 odd runs.

That was the secret to success for NZ, they played the likes of Astle, Cairns & McMillan. England must do the same.

Yeah true...Crawley has barely impressed this tour and I think Key should have played...but "Creepy" Crawley is in the squad to combat Warne...

Bloody Hell Jonesy gets a wicket then takes a superb catch! But they give Hayden out From what I heard that should have been given out.
Nope, 'fraid not. You must have control over the further disposal of the ball and of your own body movement. Check this out:

however what baffles me is that 1 run was given... surely it should have been 6 or Out????
The runs only DON'T count if the fielder took the catch. If the fielder does what Jones did, it's considered a dropped catch so any runs taken during that time are counted as they are in any dropped catch. It's in that same link i provided above.

S.Jones Stretchered Off In Fielding Error

S.Jones, has been stretchered off the field after damaging his knee while attemping to prevent a four.

Jones, down on one knee to slide on the boundary and his knee brings up a load of turf with it, Jones is down in serious pain and looks unlikly to return any time soon.

The injury leaves Nasser weak in the bowling department now with only Caddick, Hoggard, White and Giles to bowl out a very strong Aussie batting line up.

Hell something allways has to go wrong! And the catch should have counted, he had enough control over the ball.

Iam sure your right Top_Cat but from what I have been able to gather (listing on radio) they said that if Jones had the time to take the catch hold it for a few seconds and still have the time to beware of what he is about to do (step over the rope) and get rid of the ball in a tidy fashion ie he knew where he was throwing it etc... then surely he is in control??

As I said I haven't actualy seen the incdent so could be wrong.

S.Jones has left the ground and been taken to a local hospital for scans on his knee.....

Not in the opinion of the umpire. And guess who's opinion counts? :D

And I happen to agree with the umpire too. Jones didn't have full control of the ball and his body so the catch, under the current rules, doesn't count.

Easier said than done, mate. He was virtually on the line when he took it. There was no way he could have stopped himself from going over the line so he was left with only two choices;

Take the catch and concede 6 runs.
Throw it back, don't concede the runs but concede a wicket.

Either way, he wouldn't have won any points if he'd been stubborn enough to take the catch but concede a 6. So he took the right option, given his circumstances.

Yep very true Top_Cat, oh well it didn't go our way and Hayden has made full advantage of his let off.

This appears to be turning into a run feast for the Aussies.

And what was the logic again of putting Australia into bat after winning the toss ? Was it overcast or the conditions really juicy in the morning ?

Anyone who knows the 'Gabba will tell you it's quite a spicy pitch early on the first day of a match. But anyone who REALLY knows will tell you that it flattens out into a perfect batting wicket after lunch for the next 3 days............I guess that little tidbit escaped the English brains trust. Sure it LOOKS green early on but after a while, there's not much movement in the air or off the pitch for the quicks.

If i had a bit of heart i'd almost start to feel sorry for the English now, BUT heh...

I couldn't believe it when they put us in and well they are in for a long 2-3 days......
I hope it rises to 30-40 degrees and they suffer....
