Because if you count the players who weren't that impressive last time then the picture doesn't look so rosey. Hayden struggled, Langer did till he played in the last test,
What a stupid thing to say - since then, Hayden has averaged the small matter of 71.16 over 20 innings, including 6 centuries and 5 fifties. He's also ranked number 1 in the world.

As for Langer strugging last time they were over here, he played 1 Test, and scored 102 not out - a real struggle that.
Since then he's averaging 54.17 but only has 4 centuries and 4 fifties in his 20 innings.

So England have a chance because those two "weren't impressive" last time? - Get real!

But your forgetting Langer averaged only 30 in FC over the entire tour. And I think Hayden will be worked over by Caddick again.

Maybe not but they work out good plans against opposition players. I hope they take a leaf from the NZ book and frustrate McGrath and belt Warne out of the attack.
That's a lot easier said then done....we will see how it pans out, but I have serious doubts as to how far England can go in presenting a challenge to Aus if not for anything else, just because of the wide gulf in talent between the two teams.

Did anyone note S.Waugh's comments just after the last Pakistan test match ?

Ramiz asked about his anticipation of the ashes and added that the english were talking of much tougher challenge this time around, Waugh with a little humour replies "yeah they say that every time around "! Typical of an ashes tour eh ? enjpyable :)

Im not living in a fantisy, it happened before I can't see why it won't happen again. Anyway I'm keeping positive. If I don't keep positive I'll be told its the typical attitude and the problem with English cricket and if I say something positive I'll be told I'm living in a fantisy world. So whatever you say I don't really care. We will see how it all pans out on Wednesday.

Rik - being positive is one thing but utter delusion is another.

Langer and Hayden are twice the players they were in Summer 01, much as I hope that you are right, I think it will be 3 or 4-1 (I don't believe it, I'm agreeing with Marc...)

I'm not deluded I'm just thinking that if we get these 2 out then we have quite a good chance...Ponting has succeeded when these 2 have played well but when he has been exposed to the new ball he's usually got out. Now let me keep my opinions and leave off the questioning my sanity please. Cricket's a wierd game, anything can happen.

england have a chance if they get our entire top order out for 10 and then clean up the tail fast :D and i cant see that happening, England have no bowlers that can peirce the Aussie Batting and only Trescothick and Vaughn with the bat stand any chance at all, but since Vaughn said that he wants McGrath to target him we cna take him out of the equation

I dunno, McGrath doesn't allways succeed against all the players he targets. Lara may have failed a few times but one series I remember he gave the Aussies a right pasting...

lara got like 2 good innings te entire summer of play, even Mcgrath does not get who he targets EVERY time, but Vaughn is hardly the class of lara (esp when hes in form)

No but you gotta be pretty good to get 2 190s...in a row...I am guilty of not rating Vaughan before but you cannot write off someone who's scored 1000 calender runs despite not playing much in India.

By the way, who did he single out against NZ? As whoever he singled out basically gave him enough of a reason to give up the idea.

Ponting DOES not strugle against the new ball unless he is in poor form and pushing at the ball hard.

Secondly you are wrong in saying the he has scored most of his runs after Hayden and Langer have got the team of to good starts infact he has usualy has faild to capitalize on souch times.

Look at the recent series Vs Pakistan for example he scored both his 100s when the team was 1 for less than 20.

Why would Australia bat him at three if he could not play the new ball. hes our best batsman of pace bowling and unless hes in poor form has no difficulty with the new ball.

aussies will leave off when you get it right, as eclipse said Ponting usually scores runs when aust lose an early wicket
