Funny game, this. I caught the Gilly knock, absolutely superb, I felt privileged to see it. Amazing hitting.

It was surprising to note how often the commentators today entertained the notion of England actually winning this match. Chasing 550-odd, I just can't see it, even taking the conditions into account. If it actually happened, I'd imagine Ponting might cop a thumping in the press, but honestly, I wouldn't hold him liable in the slightest over the declaration. It was a good one, and he allowed plenty of time to bowl the opposition out.

Felt sorry for Cook tonight, much was being made of how tired he looked, and just near the end he succumbed. Loved the castling of Hoggard by McGrath though, what a champion. Both attacks have looked good this match, even when there's been long periods between wickets. A turn-up for me so far has been Bell - I picked him for biggest disappointment, and didn't really rate the guy, but although he hasn't set the world on fire, I think he's certainly done enough to have earnt some respect, and his performance so far has been pretty good. Definitely shown some real guts to go with the flourish he's demonstrated against Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Anyhow, yeah, the Ashes should be in our hands sometime tomorrow before tea. I've enjoyed Monty's contributions, and you have to have a laugh at Fletcher's expense when you look at how decent his batting and fielding has looked. He does have a spectacularly girlish way of celebrating his wickets, but it's all part of the charm, innit? :)

Hoggard's batting has seriously regressed over the last year or two. He should be demoted to no 11 and told to get his act sorted out
So getting out to Glenn McGrath with the new ball makes him crap all of a sudden. Remember Trent Bridge...

Haha, sums up English fans for mine, always living in past glory. "Remember when he hit that one cover drive? He`s obviously a gun, capable of everything." Things in cricket change, and you have to adapt.

Damn - its turning from farce to tragedy for England.

A sunburnt, exhausted Flintoff to tearfully resign the captaincy after this match, a la Kim Hughes?
I was joking when I said this, but jeez, Flintoff promoting Hoggard ahead of himself doesn't show a lot of confidence or appetite for the fight does it. And it backfiring so spectacularly isn't going to do him any good at all. I'd actually now consider it possible that Flintoff might resign the captaincy - not likely, but possible....

I'd agree there's a chance. It'd probably be more tired than emotional though (with Hughes it wasn't so much about results as the constant harrasment by other senior players), and I don't know that he really coveted the job like Kim did.

Got no problem with sending in Hoggard as nightwatchman though. It's worked before, and there was little to gain in Flintoff going out there. It always looks a bit silly when they're immediately dismissed, but it's generally sound, IMO.

Seriously, the only 2 players in the england team which i have faith in to not do something stupid are cook and bell, i used to think collingwood was pretty level headed but i was prooved wrong in that first test

pieterson and flintoff can win this game tom, its a win or lose, dont think they will save, dont be surprised if they get out cheaply again tom

but dont be surprised if they ride thier luck and win

Mate, England are zero chance of winning this. Absolutely zero.

they lost to pak 2-0
Aus lost to England 2-1 so therefore surely England are better than Australia?

The rankings are about consistency rather than one result, the fact Pakistan then went and lost to England 3-0 shows that Pakistan aren't the out and out better team.

Simon Jones **** all over the Aus bowlers (bar Warne).

Aus had a complete failing with their 4th pacer whereas England's bowling was spot on. Combine that with the Hussey find, and replacing Gillespie/Tait/etc. with Clark and you have the chance for the 5-0 now.
haha, sorry what? I heard McGrath was a better bowler than Simon Jones somewhere!

I was referring to the last Ashes, bar Lords McGrath wasn't really up to his usual high standard.

Oh yes, I distinctly remember them playing so well this summer when they lost 3-0
Fair point I forgot about that series. They did dominate the last test though. I was thinking about more recent series against WI and was only saying that Pakistan could claim to be 2nd best not that I think they are. England are the 2nd best team based on their performances over the last few years but since winning the Ashes they have been pretty average.

Would and should have been 2-1.

The best I will give you is 2-0 with a no contest.

Also in the first test I think it was when Pakistan bowled the umpires had ear pieces in and couldn't hear any of the edges. They got two guys out early who went on to get centuries.

These were suddenly removed for when England bowled of course.
