When Gill short arm pulled one a while back, the other commentator was going on about what a great shot it was, but gavaskar went "this isnt a shot that he should be playing this often on a pitch like this". Good stuff.

And now chepu goes. :(

Gill should not have been picked ahead of Aggarwal who was crazy prolific at home.

Think he got 2-3 huge scores in the series against South Africa

Whatever it takes!!!
It was good bowling in both cases that got the wicket. But yes, Gill had gotten a start and should have been more judicious with his shot selection, given the conditions and the number of unknowns still in front of us in such a game.

This is why the Gill shot is really bad. One wicket tends to bring two and now we're in trouble

C'mon Kohli do something in the first innings for a change.

he kinda has. The hardest part of batting is getting a start. That's why it's more frustrating when they're out for 11 off 50 rather than 2 off 7.
Look I don't totally disagree, because facing the new ball is the toughest proposition no doubt, but Gil was never really in and set. Played a couple of nice shots but otherwise looked shaky generally.

True. It's not as if all he had to do was stay there and runs would flow. The done the hard work thing is a bit of a cliche. He did the hard work but still had some hard work ahead of him.

Leach is rather under-rated, isn't he? A good spin bowler is so valuable, no matter where you play.
Best spinner we have but after his illness and Bess doing well in SA I can understand why they went with Bess ahead of him last summer as Bess can bat too. Leach is clearly a better bowler and fitness/health permitting should stay in the side for a while now.

Gill looking more and more like a bouncy wicket specialist. I'd provisioned for him having a bum England tour, but he's looking out of sorts at home too. Not encouraging signs.

Which is the frustrating part, actually. He could have well nicked off and then what you say is more applicable. But when you play a bad shot having survived 40 odd balls, it is a bigger issue than getting out early on.
