When watching Ian Bell, I always felt he his technique was right there (or better) with all those greats of his time (Tendulkar, Pietersen, Ponting, Kallis, Dravid, Sangka, you name them). But somehow he didn't live up to it.
It’s because he wasn’t as good as them.

Whatever it takes!!!

I dunno if he was as good as the others you mentioned technically, but even if that is assumed to be true, it is another reason why technique alone does not mean much in cricket. The options you have to score your runs matters.

There’s like three distinct tiers in that group.

I actually think that's a great description of his knock against SA. Came in on Day 1 at 100/4 away from home against a good attack, made a ton in a massive partnership with Stokes and set up the game.

I've been disappointed he hasn't really kicked on from that but it was a real 'arrival' type innings for sure.
Yeah Pope's not pushed on as hoped yet, but still an exciting prospect. In the County stuff he's made a habit of running up huge scores when set, so he definitely has it in him to play match shaping innings.

Norwood's on Fire
It's just good to see the pressure off Root a bit. He can just keep it ticking from the other end while Crawley is going off like this.

And as I type they take a review (yes yes I'm behind)
