*Official* 2nd Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, 13 - 17 Feb 2021

chennai pitch vs pakistan in 1999

pls don't share this video

more views means copyright claims and it is from a playlist that i do not share with anyone usually

seriously don't be a ****

pitch report starts 30 seconds in

first over of spin from kumble starts at 10:52

a few seconds later you see foot marks on day 1

at 12:45. commentators talk about the foot marks while the camera focuses on the pitch as well. if anything, this pitch has been better

this has always been the chennai pitch condition

you'd have to be a talented team against spin to see what real turn is like and you will see it if you're good enough on days 4 and 5
at 13:40, joshi comes on to bowl and shastri again reckons that the pitch might start turning from day one, while joshi has just spun one a mile from way outside off away from the righty

it was so unremarkable that commentators didn't even acknowledge it

but today we have whingers complaining about normal proceedings and complaining about turn when they're just normal turning balls on day 1 for chennai historically

i don't mean posters here when i say that, more like kp, vaughan etc

Whatever it takes!!!
BTW, I am 0% surprised the Aussies in 2017 were whinging to Jarrod Kimber about the pitches. They were pretty much doing it at the conferences too. Another reason why I feel Smith as captain wont have worked out, guy just whinges way too much. He was saying he was proving a point to journos after his SCG 100, wasn't he?

Surely, as basically an ATG by now, he should know that a couple of failures does not mean anything. And while I am not privy to Aussie newspaper articles (they all seem to be behind paywalls, at least the cricket ones) I dont understand how personal someone could have gotten about failing for like 2 tests.

I dont agree. Massive puffs of dust on the second day. India has had the better luck by winning the toss but that is not the only reason England got bundled out. They batted poorly.
There were massive puffs of dust whenever bowlers landed it in the spot, even on the first day.
Having seen that firsthand why the English spinners continued to bowl full tosses is the REAL question.

same reason why nadeem bowled like 20 no balls in the 1st test

It looks like people would much rather see a pitch that only breaks up after the first innings.

If pitch on day 1 had held on and only started rapidly breaking apart later on day 2 people would be okay/happy with that? (because they don't want it to break up on day 1?)

In that case India would have scored 450-500 and England would now be 100/4 at end of day 2 and be staring at a wicket that is quickly breaking apart and unlikely to score more than 200/250. That is what people want to see!? Seriously?

'That would be a typical win the toss win the match wicket' and would be significantly worse than the pitch we have here. You want conditions to be as similar as possible over the first 2 innings, for that to happen pitch had to break apart on day 1 rather than later on day 2.

Agree with you except the point about the test not going the distance.

Why are we obsessed about games needing to last at least 4 days. I much prefer low scoring games finish well within 4 days which we see regularly in NZ, Eng, SA and even Aus from time to time so why not India?

Conditions are different in India so obviously the pitch would have to be spinning a lot for game to finish early. No different from green seamer in NZ where sometimes games are over in less than 3 days!

I am sick of hearing all this test cricket moral talk! 'this is not how test cricket should be' 'Pitch shouldn't break up on first day' 'Matches have to last 4 days at least' 'icc need to take action'

They are no bloody rules. Test cricket is all inclusive. It should be and can be any of the varieties. As long as the wicket is not causing bodily harm to players, all this 'should' 'must' all this BS moral talk is utter rubbish.

First Class games are 4 days and those matches regularly finish in 3 days, I don't see anyone complaining about that EVER so nothing wrong when Test Matches finish in 3 days. And in hot Indian conditions that can only happen in this manner- wicket spinning from first morning.
indont care enough to substantially argue the point but I like matches where things ebb and flow over 4-5 full days. Doesn’t mean they all have to last until the last session on the fifth day. But that’s what I enjoy.

In India, on a turner, the toss is more important for the visiting team than it is for the home team, because Indians are supposed to be good players of spin. Different story that we've played spin badly on several occasions in the recent past, but generally you would expect Indian batsmen to be more skillful on turning wickets. Batting first when the pitch might be at it's most well-behaved then becomes a massive advantage for tourists.

I don't like seeing puffs of dust myself, but this wicket certainly hasn't show variable bounce because of it. To play well on it, you need to get right to the pitch of the ball, which brings skills like judgement, footwork, and timing into consideration. This is where England have been found wanting. So yes, advantage lost due to toss, but they haven't helped their cause with some bad batting either.

Also I think Root was too clever by half when he bowled himself for 11 overs. I am OK to concede that overrate needs might have necessitated it but it was really poor, defensive captaincy. There was zero pressure facing him. Of course, it didn't help that Moeen was going at over 4 per over and Leach was ineffective largely.

Although Nick Knight believed Leach has probably outbowled Ashwin this series.

Here is what I could think of, about the impact of toss on the India - Eng series last decade.

2011 - England quite clearly the better team. Toss would not have mattered much.

2012 - Again England the better team. Beat India at its own game. Epic ownage. No impact which ever way toss went.

2014 - Once again England, with or without winning toss.

2016 - India quite clearly the better team. Lost every toss (iirc) yet won the series convincingly.

2018 - Actually think India would have won the series if the rub of the green went our way(there may be other reasons as well like team selections and all, but ignoring them in this discussion). A couple of matches which we narrowly lost could have been won if we had won the toss.

2021- Will hold my horses here.

Also interestingly, the toss statistics are lopsided in England's favor last decade. Draw whatever conclusion one would want to take though.

Matches : 25
Toss won by England : 16
Toss won by India : 9
