What can England do moving forward with their batting and bowling ?
Batting is a bit tricky. Which youngsters do you back ? Its not like you haven't tried that. It may be a case of going Foakes as keeper. Stoneman has to be persevered with until Jennings/Hameed/Gubbins smash the door down but then I suppose we don't know what is in Cook's mind right now either.
The bowling obviously needs variation. I know TRJ did well against us but is he a solution or just a stop-gap when fit again ? Because in Australia and Asia you wouldn't need too many of his type. Is it not maybe better to go with COverton so when Anderson/Broad leave he can take over.
Appreciate that SeamUp. I'd love to expand on some of these thoughts but I'm pretty sure no-one in this thread wants to hear them!
Batting-wise, I agree that of the three we have selected for this tour that could be considered contentious, Stoneman is the one that has looked most comfortable and organised in these conditions and having played much of his career at Durham, I'm sure at home he can flourish and at least give us some solidity at the top. Vince's Test career I'm sure will follow his first-class career, can be beautiful to watch but is just too loose at three for me and Malan unfortunately I don't think will cut it either. So who are our options ? Personally I'd have gone back to Sam Robson for this trip, a solid first-class season and I understand has improved technically since the last time he played Test cricket. As you say it would be nice to see the likes of Hameed and Gubbins score heavily and force their way in, but I don't think we'll have that luxury and one of them may be hoisted back in sooner rather than later.
The problem is there is no obvious solution in terms of players that deserve international recognition, so we would essentially be throwing in a youngster and hoping for the best, not sure that is entirely fair on the player which is why I would resort to a more experienced batsman like Robson for the number three spot. Bairstow has to bat higher than seven, he is still one of our best bats and when Stokes returns can see him batting five and Bairstow six. Ben Foakes could certainly become an option should they want Bairstow to bat even higher and relieve him of the gloves.
Personally I think there are better options than COverton when we play in England, someone like Jamie Porter, who again only bowls around 80 mph, is very very good with a bit of something in the pitch but not sure how he'd go in places like Asia and Australia.
We don't develop quick bowlers and I was messaging Ian Pont last night who is one of the very few coaches who coaches pace rather than just settling for fast-medium typical county bowlers, he is someone I would certainly look to get involved in the England set-up, even working with the younger promising bowlers. We need to develop variation, as you say, that isn't something we can find in the next couple of years.
