So how did Santner/Rachin/Phillips bowl? (And why did Rachin get dibs over Phillips – is Ravindra still the mythical perfect-for-team-balance all-rounder of our dreams?)
Maybe they think rachin is a better bowler? Phillips is a left hand match up spinner with a bit more upside on his best side, I reckon rachin offers a bit more than that on a game to game basis.

Evidence suggests Conway gets in long ruts tbh

How long between test series? I'm tempted to send him to wellington white ball to just bosh a bit of nick into him. Won't soften the hands or solve playing early (comms pointed this out thst he's getting ahead of himself almost) but could give him confidence which often leads to technical improvement.
csk will sort him out and get him back in form

I was disappointed in Petersen the most, he was able to bat at no.6 in this test which is far more comfortable than his usual batting position and he failed, getting out twice to some pretty ordinary shots even though his SR never went above 35 ..Being one of the more experienced players I expected better.
only 3,4,5,7 showed potential to play in the actual test team on merit.

It was the non-stop T20 after the IPL which probably burnt him out last year - that US premier league plus the summer in England. Even if he does well in this season's IPL will be hard pressed to keep himself fresh.

Yeah, these guys cannot expect to keep presenting themselves fresh when they have these leagues back-to-back-to-back. The mental pressures of being an overseas player are intense - people expect results - on top of the physical of travelling the world, time zones, transport etc.

I'll be incredibly disappointed if he does well in the IPL. It'll look like he was cooked with us, but left something in reserve

There is the talk of giving Wagner a last hurrah and O'Rourke is in the squad for that game. I definitely think we should just play our best XI and have Young come in for an unchanged team, but I don't think Phillips/Blundell/Jamieson all batting 1 position higher vs this South African team is that bad an option either.

I may get laughed at but there is not as big a gulf between these sides as the scoreboard ending up showing. Had SA held all its catches then probably NZ only makes 250 to 350 in its first inning which would have alleviated the scoreboard pressure on SA then maybe SA might have made more in its first inning.. The real abysmal part of SAs play was the fielding. It was attrocious and I think I would drop some of the key culprits if I were the coach to set some standards of what is acceptable and wasn't isn't acceptable.
Isn't catching part of cricket?!

Blundell is a decent 6, Santner a maybe slightly below par 7 and Jamieson a decent 8, we go from having a superb lower order to an average one. That said the bowling would be overkill

I know international cricket can be hard on relationships / marriages, I think it took a heavy toll on the marriages of the NZ teams of the 80's just from reading the sporting bio's that came out at that time. Then in this era you have the packed international calendar + the T20 leagues road dog situations.....so you have to think that there are still going to be relationship casualties and / or hard choices around that.
As much as the focus can go on 'too much cricket' as the reason for a players form woes, so it should also be considered 'how are things on the home front'....what stresses are a diet of constant travel for cricket, and the time spent playing the cricket itself, placing on relationships. Particularly when children are involved as well. Sometimes decisions around players opting out of international cricket would concievably be about spending more time with loved ones as much as it's 'he's chasing the money'. Plus theres the old adage that money doesn't buy happiness.
I'm not seeking to spark conjecture or rumour regarding any given player, just saying that there is perhaps more to consider than technical issues or 'playing too much'.

'The Black Caps may be missing two key batters for this month’s three-match T20 series against Australia.

After Daryl Mitchell was ruled out of those games in Wellington and Auckland, coach Gary Stead confirmed Kane Williamson was in doubt as he awaited the birth of he and wife Sarah’s third child.'
