How come everyone’s talking like this game is over? Headingley is notorious for playing very differently in different weather conditions, and now it’s raining with England 110 runs short.

It would not have been over if Ajaz was playing. There is no spinner in NZ team to take advantage of the fifth day right now.

They deserve to lose for going in with a defeatist mindset.

We're undefeated in, like, our last [2] run chases. So we've got this.

As well as being a wicket taking option with all the right handers in the England team he would have kept the runs down - perhaps allowed us to use the 2nd new ball.

new zealand bowling not got the discipline, they need changes or they going to go through a long bad run.
Wagner looks shot (sadly), but Boult and Jamieson are still quality, while Southee and Ajaz should be okay for a couple more years. Would be nice to see how someone like Sears goes.

I've (unironically) really enjoyed the positivity from @nzfan all series, even when it would be easy to join in the grumbles.
I'm positive about the future but still pessimistic about the current management and the selector.

This test is hugely important for us. Cricket has a fairly low fan base in NZ. The players put in the same kind of effort like other nations do but get written off very quickly. There's been a lot of good work done since the last decade to put cricket on the glory map. It'll dwindle away in no time if this trend continues. There's still a lot of outstanding young players coming through that can carry on the good work but the management is blind folded and making some hasty band aid decisions. A win here may win some fan base back. Back to the wall stuff is always appreciated and can win back fans.

Glenn Phillips is well appreciated overseas and can put bums on the seat. Bit like Rishab Pant like player, very exciting and can change the course of the match in a session. Finn Allen is an absolute block buster in t20, every cent worth spending watching him bat. Yes still needs bit more playing experience and his numbers aren't great at domestic level but he's like Baz on steroids. Believes in attacking first. Rachin Ravindra's ability and style of play is very well documented. Looks like there was a very good crowd in Durham to watch him bat after the first day. Picked up for durham on recommendation from Harmison and not by the nz management as everyone believes or the nzc makes it sound like. Makes cricket look easy, batting, bowling or catching. A complete cricketer. Ben Sears is a bowler in the Pat Cummins mold. Tall, super quick and exciting prospect. Bit injury prone but when he's fit he's a very exciting watch. Nathan Smith, another young but an outstanding player. Equally good at swing bowling, batting and an absolute gun fielder/catcher. All these guys should make the side consistently even if it's in one format and should be played whenever opportunity arises particularly when we have great experienced players still involved. Unfortunately the management keeps picking players that are not any better performers than these guys in the disguise they have spent a lot of time in domestic cricket and by now they'll know their game well which is not true. Kane, Boult, Southee, Wagner, Ajaz and the likes are not here forever. Passing the knowledge and baton should ideally commence now. In 3 or 4 years time they'll all be gone in one or two formats. We can't wait for cricket to be run down by then and we end up with a bunch of players inexperienced at international level.

There are few more youngish players lurking but need some experience at domestic cricket and if the above players are consistently picked it'll encourage them too.

We're a bit down right now but not out yet.

Also, a few people have already commented on this, but how would you rate Mitchell out of 10 this series? Yes his batting is obviously the tenniest of tens (I see he just nosed past McCullum's record for most runs by an NZer in a series of 3 or fewer matches). But his slip catching (either 4 or 5 drops depending on how harsh you want to be) and running between the wickets have been a huge liability. Both were pretty central to NZ's defeat at Trent Bridge, and today he missed a tough but gettable slip catch off Root when the game was still very much alive. Needs some work on his slip catching technique to spinners as he never looked like catching it. Probably takes him down to a 9 imo. Maybe harsh, as without him NZ probably lose the first test inside 2 days, definitely lose the 2nd test by an innings and maybe would've been the same here.
Just watching that third session with the rain delay and they showed he is standing far wider for the off-spinner than the slip was standing for Root. Butcher made the point that for offspin the edges tend to go fine.

Bs. His standards have been so sky high almost every Test he’s played that if he’s a bit rusty from hardly playing people think he’s finished. He’s probably still the fittest guy in the team and he’ll bounce back.

There was a weird symmetry to it as earlier Root had been standing too wide as the slip to Leach, and two edges (at least one, maybe both off Mitchell?) went between him and the keeper.

Throughout the series Root and Mitchell obviously crazily good with the bat while routinely shelling chances in the slips.

I'm not far from Headingley at the moment - ongoing drizzle so not too convinced there will be much play.

As a thought - who would people pick as a combined team from the tests? I get a lot of close calls, but think a majority of the selections I would make would be Kiwis. Hardly fits the results but it does seem to have been a series where individual performances were huge in the context of the games.
