*Official* 2022 New Zealand Tour of England, Ireland, Scotland & Netherlands

Hope we don't throw away a 500+ score here by being too aggressive. Would be very NZ 2022 to suddenly get rolled for another 30 runs.

Starting to think the ICC should cap the number of times teams can request the ball is checked.

Probably not easy for Bracewell having had to wait that long for the wicket to fall. Looking vulnerable.

Very pleased for Blundell, particularly that he's had success in a country where bowlers bowl full and get swing and seam, which is where he's vulnerable (and that brought his experiment as opener to an end). Doubly so when the first innings of the first test had him failing exactly in that way - uncertain footwork, not fully forward, uncertain whether to play or not around offstump line.

So it's amazing he was able to come out in the second innings of that match and after an edgy early period, his footwork and judgment on offstump became far more decisive. It was a return to the simple approach that brought him early career success.

After that century against Australia opening I never doubted that he had the right mentality within him. But it did disappear for a while - seemed to completely lose confidence, see the way he prodded around uncertainly on the India tour. The criticisms of his form were fair, but he's put that to bed now.

His glovework over the last season was more of a concern for me. No issues at Lords though, perhaps a return to form with the gloves as well as bat.

Great first session (94 runs for 1 wicket). Same again hopefully for the afternoon session. Then slog after tea for a bit for declaration/all out. An hour of bowling at the day's end would be great. Need to do the hard work though and guts it out for a bit. Perhaps it will be Jimmy and Stuart on after lunch (get more than 320 tests on vs a guy on debut). Can't throw away any wickets - hope Mitchell can go really big (be great if he can go past his highest FC score of 170) and be nice for Bracewell to succeed.

Very weird selection. Played one amazing T20 innings on a miniature ground and his spin bowling is "developing" late in his career. There are plenty of other players who could've fulfilled this role.
Posted earlier that NZ selectors are trying to replicate the unexpected success they had in picking De Grandhomme and Mitchell for NZ duty. But... they've chosen a much higher degree of difficulty this time.

Age at NZ test debut
CDG: 30y 126d
Mitchell: 28y 200d
M Bracewell: 31y 117d

FC Batting (it would be nice to quote the record at time they made NZ debut but I cbf, so this is the current record)
CDG: 6592 at 38.7
D Mitchell: 4570 at 38.1
M Bracewell: 5262 at 33.3.

FC Bowling
CDG: 205 wickets at 29.6
D Mitchell: 90 wickets at 29.9
M Bracewell: 27 wickets at 47.5

So M Bracewell is older than both at debut, has a worse batting average by 5 runs and a vastly inferior bowling average. Really pushing it this time.

The other two had also performed really well in the Plunket Shield before their selection, whereas Beacewell had a terrible Plunket Shield season last year (great T20 season mind you). Seems he was also picked as a spinner because he turned a couple in an ODI against those renowned players of spin from the Netherlands.

What did Cole McConchie do wrong? Averages about the same as Macewell with the bat but much better with the ball. Similar age (30) and bowled well in T20s in Bangladesh.
