I don't think the Titams will have any problems, as they have nobody on big big wages, and a lot of them will be on between 100k-250k a year max. save for Prince (IIRC he took less money to join the Titans) and Bailey (they would be the highest earners, but not some of the big bucks that Souths and Manly have splashed out) and with some of the younger players, less then that, plus the compensation for Turner.

A Melbourne Storm fan stands to win $1.1m after placing $200k on them to win the Premiership as he believes Greg Inglis will shine at 5/8 and be a star there. I think I will he will play there this season, I guess the more he has the ball, the better.

Been working on a season preview for a bit, this is what Ive come up with...
The strongest line ups are more of an indication of what id expect rather than what it will exactly be...

Brisbane Broncos
Prediction: 2nd
Strongest Team: 1 Karmichael Hunt 2 Steve Michaels 3 Brent Tate 4 Justin Hodges 5 Tame Tupou 6 Darren Lockyer 7 Shane Perry 8 Sam Thaiday 9 Shaun Berrigan 10 Petero Civoniceva 11 David Stagg 12 Corey Parker 13 Tonie Carroll -Reserves: 14 Michael Ennis 15 Ben Hannant 16 Brad Thorn 17 Dane Carlaw.
Strengths: Have more big game players than any other side, the likes of Lockyer, Hodges, Berrigan and Civoniceva have all performed brilliantly in big matches throughout their career. The backline boasts five internationals and all are genuine match winners, the forwards have their fair share of stars with six of the pack playing test football at some stage. They have the right blend of exciting young players with Hunt, Ennis and Michaels all expected to be in the 17, add to that the experience of Carroll, Lockyer and Civoniceva and they certainly seem to have the right balance. Getting over the end of season slump in 2006 was also a positive, Brisbane have always been a team that plays on confidence and this year will be no different.
Weaknesses: It’s very hard to defend the premiership in the modern era. Its been 9 years since the last time a team won back to back titles (Brisbane in 97 and 98) and doing it again will be tougher than that time around. The obvious loss is Shane Webcke, you can’t just replace a guy like that, in Sam Thaiday Brisbane have a ready made replacement but he’s an entirely different type of player. The squad overall looks like being one of the strongest but that doesn’t always win you football matches, this year they definitely need to play more as a team than they did during 06.
Key Player: Darren Lockyer, best player in the world now, did everything last year and there’s no way Brisbane can win the competition without this man at his best.
Look Out for: Dave Taylor, massive wraps on this guy, bigger, stronger, tougher and faster than Webcke at the same age, former Australian schoolboy who should make a big impact when he gets a chance in the top grade this season.
Top Tryscorer: Karmichael Hunt

Canberra Raiders
Prediction: 13th
Strongest Team: 1 Bronx Goodwin 2 Colin Best 3 Phil Graham 4 William Zillman 5 Craig Frawley 6 Todd Carney 7 Michael Dobson 8 Scott Logan 9 Lincoln Withers 10 Troy Thompson 11 Tom Learyod Lahrs 12 Glen Turner 13 Alan Tongue – Reserves 14 Michael Weyman 15 Josh Miller 16 Dane Tilse 17 Marshall Chalk
Strengths: This team has a lot of young future stars, there is a distinct chance that they could produce something similar to that Penrith did in 2003, guys like Todd Carney, Tom Learoyd Lahrs and Troy Thompson are all still quite young but have played enough first grade to be considered senior players now. While they easily have the most inexperienced team in the competition they could easily make a big impact based on youthful exuberance. Their forward pack is hugely under rated, when a guy like Neville Costigan will be fighting for even a spot on the bench you know you have depth, I’d rate their pack as one of the top five in the NRL. Their depth in general is quite good even in the backs, Dobson may lose out the halfback position to Andrew Dunemann but they are one of the few teams that could suffer an injury or two and have a ready made replacement in waiting.
Weaknesses: No real stars in their side. It’s going to be a big ask for Todd Carney to run the side at such a young age while the backline in general is lacking big names. Bronx Goodwin and William Zillman are both outstanding youngsters but could be caught out in defence at the top level. Jason Smith is a huge loss, probably more so than any of the other loses, Smith gave Carney guidance but now it’s up to Todd to run the side himself.
Key Player: Alan Tongue, was the heart and soul of this team in 06, made over 1000 tackles and will probably need to make that many more in 07. One of the real nice guys of the competition plays well above his weight and is likely to be given the captaincy, he’s an inspiration in this team and will need to play 24 games this season or the Raiders will certainly lack some punch in the pack.
Look Out For: William Zillman, scored over 30 tries in Premier League last season playing as a halfback, is likely to start this season in the centres and is a class act. His defence is questionable but he has speed to burn as well as excellent ball skills, we may see him play a number of positions throughout the season.
Top Tryscorer: Phil Graham

Canterbury Bulldogs
Prediction: 1st
Strongest Team: 1 Luke Patten 2 Hazem El Masri 3 Willie Tonga 4 Andrew Emilio 5 Matt Utai 6 Daniel Holdsworth 7 Brent Sherwin 8 Mark O’Meley 9 Corey Hughes 10 Willie Mason 11 Sonny Bill Williams 12 Andrew Ryan 13 Reni Maitua – Reserves: 14 Chris Armit 15 Kane Cleal 16 Dallas McIlwain 17 Ben Roberts
Strengths: Sensational forward pack, that’s not a pack you want to come up against when they are at their best, all of them except for Hughes have been internationals for a very good reason. SBW will be looking to have his first full season in the top grade after his injury plagued career thus far. The backs aren’t terrible either, there is a lot of tryscoring ability in the three quarter line. Daryl Millard will be pushing all of the outside backs for a spot so competition is fierce. Bulldogs also have the luxury of having the best goalkicker in the game, El Masri will win them three or four games at least off his boot and that’s a huge advantage when the competition is this close.
Weaknesses: Hard to see any, depth in the forwards is probably their only one. Around Origin time they could struggle to put out a solid pack but apart from that it’s hard to see any. Nate Myles move to the Roosters could cost them a lot too, his impact coming off the bench was outstanding and its now up to guys like Armit and McIlwain to do his job. Also the team is largely unchanged from 2006 and could be carrying some mental scars from their semi final loss to Brisbane, if they can get over this though it’s hard to see them finishing anywhere else but top three.
Key Player: Willie Mason, one of the top players in the game now, his attitude is under control and his performances do the talking now, on the days he turns up and plays his best hes unstoppable, too many performances similar to that his produced in Origin 1 last year could see him very close to a Dally M Medal.
Look Out For: Ben Roberts, Kiwi halfback turned centre made a few outstanding appearances in the top grade last season and is one for the future for both the dogs and NZ. Is likely to get a chance off the bench at the start if the season but could put the starting halves under pressure with some good performances.
Top Tryscorer: Hazem El Masri

Cronulla Sharks
Prediction: 9th
Strongest Team: 1 David Simmons 2 Fraser Anderson 3 Josh Hannay 4 Ben Pomeroy 5 Lee Hookey 6 Brett Seymour 7 Brett Kimmorley 8 Ben Ross 9 Kevin Kingston 10 Luke Douglas 11 Phil Leuluai 12 Lance Thompson 13 Paul Gallen – Reserves: 14 Richard Villasanti 15 Reece Williams 16 Craig Stapleton 17 Greg Bird
Strengths: New coach and new team. Ricky Stuart is the best thing to happen to Cronulla since E.T. He will bring fresh ideas to a team who looked clueless in the back half of 2006, a new look backline is likely with the departure of old heads Albert, Vagana and the possible omission of Adam Dykes. Ben Ross will be back after a year on the sidelines, the former Origin player will be a massive plus to their pack. Brett Seymour playing 5/8 outside Kimmorley should do well, I’m expecting similar performances to those that saw him finish 9th in the Dally M’s in 2005. You’d also hope Stuart will realise Luke Covell is barely a park footy standard player and drop him from the top side, Josh Hannay is almost a like for like replacement, just ten times better.
Weaknesses: Could take the new look team a little while to gel, also how well can Kimmorley adapt to a new style of play, he had his worst year in first grade last year and the axe is still hanging around should he start the season poorly. With the likes of Dykes and Kearney putting pressure on him his spot certainly isn’t assured. They have lost some experienced players like Phil Bailey but the players in to replace them aren’t the worst, there’s every chance they could surprise and finish top four and on the other hand they could easily come bottom four.
Key Player: Brett Kimmorley, he’s under massive pressure, he needs to start the season well or his career with the Sharks is over, he’s generally responded well to pressure in the past, you don’t win competitions and play for Australia if you are completely hopeless, the addition of Seymour will help his game too, both have excellent kicking games and the team will be better off with them in the halves.
Look Out For: Fraser Anderson, former Broncos winger or centre who is in the mould of Lote Tuqiri and Wendell Sailor. Just didn’t show enough to get another contract with Brisbane but he will be a good addition to the Sharks backline, hes big and fast and can sniff out a try, he is definitely the type of player Cronulla have been lacking in recent times.
Top Tryscorer: Lee Hookey

Gold Coast Titans
Prediction: 15th
Strongest Team: 1 Richie Mathers 2 Matt Petersen 3 Mat Rogers 4 Brett Delaney 5 Chris Walker 6 Preston Campbell 7 Scott Prince 8 Luke Bailey 9 Nathan Friend 10 James Stosic 11 Anthony Laffranchi 12 Gavin Cooper 13 Mark Minichiello – Reserves: 14 Brad Meyers 15 Michael Hodgson 16 Matt Hilder 17 Luke O’Dwyer
Strengths: New boys playing on the block have high expectations for 2007, they have a premiership winning halves combination and their starting 13 is full of experienced NRL campaigners. Luke Bailey is easily their best buy, his the best front rower in the game and will lead a pretty impressive forward pack. The depth in forwards is quite decent, Luke Swain, Kris Kahler and Clint Amos are all likely to miss out on a spot in the side. Mat Rogers should do well if he’s playing in the centres, I don’t think he’ll play any wider and would be wasted if hes on the wing.
Weaknesses: Depth in the backs. Walker and Petersen are likely going to be the worst pair of wingers in the NRL as it is and if there’s an injury in the three quarter line Lelea Pea looks to be the next best player in waiting. It’s going to take time for this team to gel, I think they’ll start slowly and come home reasonably well, I don’t think they can challenge for finals spot but would be happy with 8 or 9 wins.
Key Player: Mat Rogers, really has to perform to justify his return, will probably also do the goalkicking. Ideally you would want to play him at five eighth but the balance of the side wont allow it, hes going to need some time to adjust back to league, particularly if he’s going to be playing in a new position.
Look Out For: Gavin Cooper, former Cowboys player had an awesome season last year is a vital member of this team. His versatility will be tested as he’s likely to fill in somewhere in the backline throughout the season, his best position is in the backrow and as a strong ball runner he could be very damaging.
Top Tryscorer: Brett Delaney

Manly Sea Eagles
Prediction: 7th
Strongest Team: 1 Brett Stewart 2 Steve Matai 3 Jamie Lyon 4 Steve Bell 5 Chris Hicks 6 Travis Burns 7 Matt Orford 8 Brett Kite 9 Michael Monaghan 10 Jason King 11 Anthony Watmough 12 Glenn Stewart 13 Steve Menzies – Reserves: 14 Adam Cuthbertson 15 Shayne Dunley 16 Luke Williamson 17 George Rose
Strengths: Have one of the strongest teams on paper in the competition, the backline is as good as any with the addition of Jamie Lyon, there are players such as Michael Robertson putting pressure on the guys in the team. They have depth in forwards too, Nathan Tutt, is just one player who will be unlucky to miss out on a spot in the side. Matt Orford has matured into one of the top players in the game and his combination with Monaghan and Burns will be crucial for the side again, I’ve got them to finish Seventh but if they won the minor premiership it wont come as a shock.
Weaknesses: The loss of Ben Kennedy is the obvious one, he carried this team at times last season, there isn’t a ready made replacement so the Sea Eagles will have to make do with what they have. Menzies is almost certain to move to lock, it won’t effect his game too much but it should see him have a greater impact in attack in the middle of the park. There aren’t too many other weaknesses with this side, playing games outside of Sydney has been a massive problem for them in recent times but that can easily be addressed.
Key Player: Matt Orford, captain, halfback and goalkicker. He’ll do it all this season, an injury to him would spell disaster for this team. He has the ability to win and lose games by himself, Manly fans will be hoping it’s more wins than losses.
Look Out For: Phil Moorwood, big front rower who should crack the top grade this year. Has spent some time in the lower grades but will come of age in 2007, it wouldn’t surprise me to see him in the 17 come round one, but it’s likely he’ll have to start in reserve grade.
Top Tryscorer: Brett Stewart

Melbourne Storm
Prediction: 3rd
Strongest Team: 1 Billy Slater 2 Steve Turner 3 Anthony Quinn 4 Matt King 5 Matt Geyer 6 Greg Inglis 7 Cooper Cronk 8 Antonio Kaufusi 9 Cameron Smith 10 Ian Donnelly 11 Dallas Johnson 12 Michael Crocker 13 Ryan Hoffman – Reserves: 14 Brett White 15 Jeremy Smith 16 Adam Blair 17 James Aubusson
Strengths: One of the top teams on paper in the competition. Have quality players throughout the squad and have match winners in the key positions. Cameron Smith runs this team brilliantly and is well supported by Cooper Cronk. Just how will Greg Inglis go at five eighth is what everyone is asking. There is no doubting his ability, he is one of the top players in the competition but he now has to prove himself again at the age of 20. The forwards are still under rated, Hoffman, Johnson and Crocker combine to be the most damaging back row in the competition.
Weaknesses: Can they get over the fact they didn’t win the comp last year? They ran away with the minor premiership and got over run on grand final day, there’s a danager they could use that as too much motivation in their campaign in 2007. They have lost a couple of quality players to the Gold Coast, last season the impressive thing about their team was the players who didn’t make it, now they don’t have the luxury of Jake Webster and Nathan Friend, there’s every chance they could uncover another outstanding youngster, but as it stands they haven’t yet.
Key Player: Cooper Cronk, He’s a marked man now, flew under the radar in 2006 but this year there are expectations on him, having Inglis outside him will be hit or miss really, he’s going to have to guide Inglis through the transition just a year after being brought in himself.
Look Out For: James Aubusson, a halfback or five eighth will be in the squad each week I’d imagine. He will provide cover early in the year in particular is Inglis gets caught out in the halves, there we’re huge wraps on this guy at the start of last season but with the form of Cronk he never got a chance, 2007 could be his year.
Top Tryscorer: Billy Slater

New Zealand Warriors
Prediction: 11th
Strongest Team: 1 Wade McKinnon 2 Michael Crockett 3 Simon Mannering 4 Jerome Ropati 5 Manu Vatuvei 6 Michael Witt 7 Grant Rovelli 8 Steve Price 9 Nathan Fien 10 Ruben Wiki 11 Logan Swann 12 Michael Luck 13 Louis Anderson – Reserves: 14 Lance Hohaia 15 Evarn Tuimavave 16 Epalahame Lauaki 17 Wairangi Koopu
Strengths: This will be the same as any other Warriors team, they have great attacking flair and can hit teams hard in defence, on paper there is every chance they may be right up there come the end of the season. They have some very good young players in Mannering and Rovelli while the experienced heads up front of Price and Wiki will lead them well. They finished off 2006 very strongly and in Ivan Clearly have a capable coach, if they put it together early in the season they have every chance of making the top eight.
Weaknesses: Again like every Warriors team they are unpredictable. They are just as likely to run last as they are to come first, the first team squad is capable but their stars are potentially too young or too old, there’s very little balance in this part of their game. Winning games on Australian soil has been hard work in the last couple of years as well, they have to get over this or they will struggle.
Key Player: Ruben Wiki, heart and soul of the team, he’s playing as well as ever and some would argue getting better by the season. Since moving to the Warriors he has been an inspiration and if the whole team showed as much guts as he did they would be a lot better than they have been.
Look Out For: Patrick Ah Van, promising winger who had a good taste of first grade last season and showed a lot of potential, will battle with Crockett and Vatuvei for a spot in the starting line up but maybe be third in line. He’s the type of guy the Warriors will be looking to hold on to in future as he’s a natural try scorer and will likely be an international.
Top Tryscorer: Michael Crockett

Newcastle Knights
Prediction: 8th
Strongest Team: 1 Milton Thaiday 2 Todd Polglase 3 Adam MacDougall 4 George Carmont 5 Paul Franze 6 Kurt Gidley 7 Andrew Johns 8 Josh Perry 9 Danny Buderus 10 Adam Woolnough 11 Steve Simpson 12 Clint Newton 13 Daniel Abraham – Reserves: 14 Jarrod Mullen 15 Luke Davico 16 Kirk Reynoldson 17 Mitchell Sargent
Strengths: Still have a number of international players including Andrew Johns off course. The forward pack is ultra important for the Knights and they seem to have found a good balance between youth and experience there. They will start the season injury free and guys like Thaiday and MacDougall will need to stay that way if they are to challenge the best team. On paper the team is as good as any and if they have a good start to the season there’s every chance they will be right up there.
Weaknesses: Brian Smith has never won a competition and he’s had better sides than this to do it with. While the forwards look strong the backs are quite so impressive, they lack a genuine strike weapon in the three quarter line and most have had their fair share of injury problems in the past. It will be interesting to see their backline come round one as they appear to have two fullbacks and three centre’s to fit into five positions.
Key Player: Andrew Johns, how’d you guess? Still a one man team in many people’s eyes, if he gets injured you wouldn’t back them to win the comp with someone else’s money. He still remains as one of the best players in the competitions but there’s no doubting he’s slowing down.
Look Out For: Paul Franze, made a huge impact for the Sharks a couple of years ago and was identified as a future Origin centre, but a serious knee injury saw him shipped off to the Panthers and now after a year in England he’s back in the NRL and ready to give it another crack. Could be tough for him to get a chance in his favoured centre position and may have to make do with a spot on the wing.
Top Tryscorer: Kurt Gidley

North Queensland Cowboys
Prediction: 6th
Strongest Team: 1 Matt Bowen 2 Brenton Bowen 3 Paul Bowman 4 Ty Williams 5 Ashley Graham 6 Jason Smith 7 Johnathon Thurston 8 Shane Tronc 9 Aaron Payne 10 Matthew Scott 11 Jacob Lillyman 12 Luke O’Donnell 13 Justin Smith – Reserves: 14 David Faiumu 15 Rod Jensen 16 Steve Southern 17 Carl Webb
Strengths: The Cowboys have a lot going for them this season, a lot of strike power in the backs, a fine halves pairing and they have a point to prove after last years poor showing. They have real depth in the forwards and that is emphasised by the fact guys like Cashmere, Faumuina and Muspratt will all have to battle for spots in the team. Matt Bowen is one player in particular has a lot to prove after a poor season in 06, he is still considered one of the finest attacking players in the game and if he can show his best this year the Cowboys will be better for it.
Weaknesses: They have lost some quality players, particuarly young ones like McConnell, Tanielu and Cooper. Also don’t underestimate the loss of Matt Sing, the clubs all time leading try scorer saves as many tries as he scores and someone will need to step up with his departure. The club is also putting a lot of faith in Jason Smith, everyone knows how good he is, but can they get 20 games out of him this year?
Key Player: Johnathon Thurston, the Australian halfback is one of the premier players in the game and we saw what happened to the Cowboys last year when he was injured, a similar thing is likely to happen if we see another injury to him. He’s also likely to be the team captain and goalkicker, there’s a lot of responsibility for this guy who is still relatively young.
Look Out For: Mark Henry, outside back who made a few appearances in first grade last year and is likely to feature again this season. Can sniff out a try from anywhere is considered one of Queensland’s future Origin backs, will probably battle with Brenton Bowen for a spot in the side at the start of the season.
Top Tryscorer: Matt Bowen

Parramatta Eels
Prediction: 4th
Strongest Team: 1 Luke Burt 2 Jarryd Hayne 3 Timana Tahu 4 Ben Smith 5 Eric Grothe 6 Brett Finch 7 Tim Smith 8 Nathan Cayless 9 Mark Riddell 10 Fuifui Moi Moi 11 Nathan Hindmarsh 12 Chad Robinson 13 Todd Lowrie – Reserves: 14 PJ Marsh 15 Justin Tsolous 16 Ian Hindmarsh 17 Josh Cordoba
Strengths: Have a top notch backline and their forwards are also very good. They have signed some decent players in Ian Hindmarsh and Todd Lowrie while Brett Finch could be better for his move to the club. Nathan Hindmarsh is likely to do less defensive work to improve his attacking game and this can only help the team. Michael Hagan is a smart coach and there is plenty to like about his style, I think it will suit Parramatta. They are my tip for the premiership after going on a late season charge.
Weaknesses: The halves pairing are very much make or break, Tim Smith had an outstanding debut season but last year was forgettable for him, his 5/8 Brett Finch has also had his fair share of bad games in his career, if he doesn’t improve this year he could soon be forgotten as an NRL player. They also seem to be short one or two back rowers, Nathan Hindmarsh is likely to play 80 minutes each week but I don’t see too many other players to play in 12 or 13 to get excited about.
Key Player: Nathan Hindmarsh, the best back rower in the comp is in the form of his life and could lead a Parra charge to the premiership. His work rate is well known and his inspirational performances win the Eels more games than they deserve sometimes, if he’s missing late in the season we’ll see a repeat of 2005 where they lost the premiership that was pretty much theirs.
Look Out For: Zeb Taia, possibly the next best forward outside of their starting players, he’s a back rower with plenty of ability and will make a big impact in 2007. Has played a couple of NRL games already but should get more time on the field in 2007, coach Hagan won’t be able to ignore him for too long if he puts in good performances in the reserves.
Top Tryscorer: Jarryd Hayne

Penrith Panthers
Prediction: 16th
Strongest Team: 1 Rhys Wesser 2 Nick Youngquest 3 Luke Lewis 4 Michael Gordon 5 Luke Rooney 6 Brett Firman 7 Craig Gower 8 Joel Clinton 9 Luke Priddis 10 Tony Puletua 11 Matthew Cross 12 Frank Pritchard 13 Trent Waterhouse – Reserves: 14 Paul Aiton 15 Frank Puletua 16 Shane Rodney 17 Mark O’Halloran
Strengths: Have one of the top halfbacks in the competition in Craig Gower, hes a creative smart player who punches above his weight. You know he lifts the rest of the team with his performances and the side has the ability to go with him. Also have a very good coach in Matthew Elliott, has produced outstanding results for the past years with a poor Raiders side and may be able to get similar results with Penrith.
Weaknesses: Have one of the poorest teams on paper, they have played on the emotion of 2003 since their premiership win and it’s just not good enough now. They don’t intimidate teams like they used to and opposition clubs expect to beat them. Their forwards are sloppy and slow and the backs don’t appear to have many tries in them. I don’t see a great season ahead for Penrith, they may win a few games but I’d be surprised if they were any higher than 13th.
Key Player: Luke Priddis, former international hooker is the key player in their side and is still under rated by many. Makes a lot of tackles each week and chips in with some handy tries, hes a natural leader in this team even if he’s not the captain. They have a capable replacement in Paul Aiton if he was to get injured but their combination is crucial to the teams success.
Look Out For: Craig Trindall, there are a lot of question marks over Brett Firman still and Trindall may need to play a lot of first grade this year. He’s a solid 5/8 who could be the difference in avoiding the wooden spoon, he has a pretty good kicking game and would combine well with Gower.
Top Tryscorer: Rhys Wesser

South Sydney Rabbitohs
Prediction: 14th
Strongest Team: 1 David Peachey 2 Nathan Merritt 3 Nigel Vagana 4 Yileen Gordon 5 Reece Simmonds 6 Jeremy Smith 7 Joe Williams 8 Roy Asotasi 9 Stuart Webb 10 Peter Cusack 11 David Kidwell 12 Dean Widders 13 John Sutton – Reserves: 14 Shane Rigon 15 Joe Galuvao 16 Manase Manuokafoa 17 Scott Geddes
Strengths: This is the best squad of players Souths have had since 1989 and there are a lot of new faces around the club. Have an excellent coach in Jason Taylor and is you’d hope he make the right call on a number of close team selections. They have some good depth in forwards while the backs look strong and fast, they have the luxury of calling on the services of guys like Shannon Hegarty, Beau Champion and Paul Mellor when they get injuries. While their team may not be the strongest in the league surprisingly they seem to have more depth than some of their rivals.
Weaknesses: It takes a new team time to gel, expectations for Souths are high but it’s unrealistic to expect them to win the comp. They have improved but not enough to the stage where they are genuine finals contenders. There is still a lot resting on the shoulders of Joe Williams who hasn’t made the most of his chances in previous season, time will tell if he’s the real deal.
Key Player: Roy Asotasi, the biggest off season move needs to play every game this year and a lot of minutes in them to justify his contract. He is a high quality player and may soon take the mantle as the best prop in the game. If Souths can get the best out of him then they’ll do well.
Look Out For: Beau Champion, versatile back who has a big future in front of him. Is mainly a halfback or five eighth but is also capable of playing in the centres. It could be tough for him to make Souths starting 17 early in the season but I have no doubt he’ll get a chance at some stage in 07. If Joe Williams struggles in the early rounds I think we’ll see him given a chance there sooner rather than later.
Top Tryscorer: Nathan Merritt

St George Illawarra Dragons
Prediction: 12th
Strongest Team: 1 Ben Hornby 2 Wes Naqaima 3 Luke MacDougall 4 Matt Cooper 5 Brett Morris 6 Mark Gasnier 7 Mat Head 8 Justin Poore 9 Simon Woolford 10 Jason Ryles 11 Sam Isemonger 12 Ben Creagh 13 Dean Young – Reserves: 14 Beau Scott 15 Corey Payne 16 Ashton Sims 17 Danny Wicks
Strengths: Have some oustanding players like every other year, but once again it will be a question if they can put it together. In Simon Woolford they have signed an experienced player and don’t underestimate his leadership value. Luke MacDougall was also a good signing for them, in previous seasons they have seemed a bit light on in outside backs but with the likes of Creagh and Gasnier more than capable of filling in when in need they have a really versatile look about them. They have rep players in key positions too, Hornby is an important player in the squad and will no doubt be asked to play four or five positions throughout the season.
Weaknesses: It’s hard to see them competing for the title with what is arguably the weakest team they have ever fielded. With the exception of 1999 they have barely looked like winning a comp and their form is always shot by the end of September. The halves are a worry, they have the worlds best centre likely to start at 5/8 and a guy who is one of the most injury prone in the competition at halfback. Key forwards Ryles, Creagh and Young have all had off season surgery and how they respond early in the year will almost determine their season. I don’t think they are capable of making the finals but will probably show glimpses of their old brilliant self throughout the season.
Key Player: Mark Gasnier, it will almost be a case of if he adjusts to his new position then the Dragons will be a threat, unfortunately there’s only so long you can play a guy like this out of position before he gets caught out, the extra defensive work will hamper his attack I feel. He is one of the top players in our game but not one of the best five eighths.
Look Out For: Brett Morris, most would remember his try scoring exploits at the end of last season, he’s a star in the making and may well go on to play Origin this year, he’s big, strong and fast, the perfect would for a winger these days.
Top Tryscorer: Brett Morris

Sydney Roosters
Prediction: 10th
Strongest Team: 1 Anthony Minichiello 2 Amos Roberts 3 Iosia Soliola 4 Joel Monaghan 5 John Williams 6 Josh Lewis 7 Mitchell Pearce 8 Danny Nutley 9 Craig Wing 10 Chris Beattie 11 Craig Fitzgibbon 12 Nate Myles 13 Braith Anasta – Reserves: 14 Anthony Tupou 15 David Shillington 16 Jamie Soward 17 Ashley Harrison
Strengths: Will at least start the season with a full squad to pick from, injuries decimated them in 2006 and with guys like Minichiello and Anasta fighting fit they should be better off. One area where they were behind the top sides last year was up front, but new coach Chris Anderson has recruited two former Sharks players of his in Nutley and Beattie. Nutley in particular is a fine signing and is exactly what the Roosters needed to add to their team, he’s a former Origin player who will play close to 70 minutes a week. The halves have a young fresh look about them and could prove the difference between this year and last.
Weaknesses: The halves again, Mitchell Pearce is still unknown, at 17 its unknown just how good he is, he might not see action straight away but its always tough for a young halfback to adjust to the pace of the top grade. The backrow could be a problem too, they seem to have good ball skills but not a rough em up gutsy type player, Harrison is likely to spend time in the second row this season but I don’t think he has the game to suit it. The hooker position is another problem area, Craig Wing is a fine player but hes not an 80 minute player, he’s better off playing half a game and with Soward as back up they could struggle to provide good ball to the halves.
Key Player: Anthony Minichiello, former Australian fullback and golden boot winner will be desperate to reclaim his tag as the games best number 1. A serious back injury last year ruined his season and he will be looking to make amends in 2007. While the Roosters had a serious injury toll in 06 they didn’t miss anyone as much as they did Minichiello, if he cant relcaim his form or he gets injured again they wont have a chance of making the finals.
Look Out For: Setaimata Sa, there are some massive raps on this kid, some are even saying he is the Roosters saviour, the club will be desperate not to rush him but they may have no choice if his lower grade performances are similar to that of last year. He’s mainly a centre but can play as a 5/8 or lock, with the Roosters looking a bit light on for centre’s they may have no choice but to pick him early, I wouldn’t rule out seeing him round one but I don’t think it’s going to be that early.
Top Tryscorer: Anthony Minichiello

Wests Tigers
Prediction: 5th
Strongest Team: 1 Brett Hodgson 2 Shannon McDonnell 3 Dean Collis 4 Paul Whatuira 5 Daniel Fitzhenry 6 Benji Marshall 7 John Morris 8 Chris Heighington 9 Robbie Farah 10 Ryan O’Hara 11 Ben Galea 12 Dene Halatau 13 Liam Fulton – Reserves: 14 Todd Payten 15 Keith Galloway 16 Bryce Gibbs 17 Taniela Tuiaki
Strengths: Still have a lot of players left from the premiership winning side of 2006, these guys still have a certain arrogance about them that makes team’s lift when they play them. Last years disappointments will spur them onto a much better 2007 too I think. Benji is back from injury and after a long lay off you would hope he’s fit a ready to go, their campaign once again rests on his shoulders. With the exception of Fitzhenry their backline has speed to burn, they are all clever players who are also natural try scorers, they also have one of the best goalkickers in the business and like the Bulldogs this will get them home in some close games they might otherwise have lost.
Weaknesses: They have no halfback, Scott Prince played most of last season without a heart but he still organised the team well, in John Morris they have a utility player who is really the best option in a squad without a recognised number 7. I also think they may be lacking a top line prop forward, they have lost Skando and Laffranchi without replacing them. Injuries were a problem last year and you’d think they are in trouble if it happens again, they have an impressive 17 man team but the next lot of players look some way off being first grade standard.
Key Player: Benji Marshall, we saw with Brisbane last year you can win the comp with a poor halfback if you have a brilliant five eighth, this situation is exactly the same for the Tigers who have one of the best in Marshall. This year he’s going to need to step up and become more of a ball player than a ball runner, we will still see some breathtaking moments I’m sure, but they will be less frequent. In the best interests of the team he has to become the leader and develop his game to the point he may play halfback at some stage. He’s good enough to step up and do this for the team and the Tigers will go well because of it.
Look Out For: Luke Harlen, former Penrith and Sharks lower grade prop who is another who was expected to make it big a couple of years ago. Injuries have hampered his progress but a move to the Tigers to play under Tim Sheens will see him finally become a first grader. The Tigers look a bit light on for props so this is a perfect chance for him to stamp his class on the Telsta Premiership.
Top Tryscorer: Paul Whatuira

Nathan Tutt moved to QLD cup with Rockhampton from memory BTW. I reckon Glen Stewart, Glenn Hall and Matt Balin are the players to watch out for. Ballin is expected to take Dunley spot on the bench and maybe even Monnas starting spot. I reckon Hall will get the final spot in the 17 over Curberston, there also a young Jesery Fegg forward that seems to get big raps. I can't remember his last name even though i work with him.

Ouch, harsh on Morris there. John Morris is one of the most underrated players in the comp imo. He was one of the Eels best players during their brilliant run home last year, and should he & Marshall get things set out early in the season, they'll cause problems for most teams.

Newcastle Knights
Prediction: 8th
Strongest Team: 1 Milton Thaiday 2 Todd Polglase 3 Adam MacDougall 4 George Carmont 5 Paul Franze 6 Kurt Gidley 7 Andrew Johns 8 Josh Perry 9 Danny Buderus 10 Adam Woolnough 11 Steve Simpson 12 Clint Newton 13 Daniel Abraham – Reserves: 14 Jarrod Mullen 15 Luke Davico 16 Kirk Reynoldson 17 Mitchell Sargent
TBH i'd have Mullen in the starting team at 5/8, move Gidley into the centres, & either Carmont or MacDougall onto the wing for Polglase. Mullen is touted as the man to take over when Johns retires, and he & the team can only benefit with Mullen starting alongside Johns so he can ease into the Playmaking role once Johns packs it up with far more experience. Also, it can only help that he'd be starting alongside, and learning from one of the greatest players the game has seen.

Morris has never really played halfback, hes a natural dummy half who parramatta turned into a solid five eighth, now he has to adjust to playing in 7, i dont think hes good enough...

yeh I'd have Mullen in ther 6 as well, but i dont see it happening, Gidley is the Knights golden child for some reason and he will play at 5/8 i think. I'd Polglase in the backline somewhere, he's a very good player, i dont think he'll get to play fullback with Thaiday there but he could be handy on the wing or in the centres

Some interesting trial results last night, an under strength titans team was easily beaten by a near full strength Storm outfit.
Interesting one for me was Roosters 10-4 over Tigers, both teams were a bit below strength but given the line ups i thought Wests might have won. Roosters Utlity Chris Flannery has also broken his ankle and is likely to be out till about June.

Is Chris Walker going to be out for a while or was it a minor injury. Apparently he had a really good game on the wing.

Actually according to the match report it was 12-6 to Melbourne with 20 to go and Inglis shows he has obviously a lot to learn at 5/8. Not related but didn't Karmichael Hunt play at 6 for the Broncos in a trial match 1-2 years ago?

Also did anybody hear about Tom Pritchard, brother of Frank? A double-whammy for him as he go stabbed in that brawl and when he is better he will also get charged for his bit in the scuffle.
