**Official** 1st Test @ Perth, 22nd-26th November

A number of series recently have seen the away side win the First Test but not the series. England in Pakistan with a similar hiding to kick things off.

Having said that, the future of this Aussie team when certain bowlers retire looks pretty average.
That also had a lot to do with the pitches.

England would have won 3-0 if Pak didn't become so desperate.

Don't think Australia is gonna start the same tactics (although with the weakness of the Indian batting against spin, would be the best way to win).

Pacey pitches actually help India cause
1) Bumrah is the best pacer in the world
2) Kohli, KL don't become free wickets

I would give McSweeney more time but Cowan definitely looking exonerated about complaining he was an open-faced-slapper. Didn't really look like he wanted to meet the ball at all.
Warner made a comment before the Test saying that being a left hander it was easier to face Bumrah because the angle gave him more room to play and that he looked like a nightmare for right handers.

Only one right handed opener has scored a 100 vs Bumrah and that was Markham swinging from the hip on a dodgy wicket. Left handed openers have faired much better vs Bumrah. Even Marcus Harris averaged 37 vs Bumrah in 2018/19.

New Zealand had 2 left handed openers, Conway and Latham. Beat India 3-0.
I understand the point of persisting with McSweeney but 3 right handers in the Top 4 is rough vs Bumrah, especially if a wicket falls very early. I’d pick Harris or Renshaw to open in the 2nd Test.

Stopping the initial onslaught from Bumrah is key. I think India is less likely to play Jadeja if there are more left handers in the side as well.

Ironically if India had got a middling score in the first innings they may well be in a worse position in the match, they got out early enough to get Australia in while the conditions were bowler-friendly. Still, while scoreboard pressure is a thing, and while India’s bowling is majestic, 107 ao and 12/3 is not good in anyone’s book, Labuschagne looking like a flat track bully these days, Khawaja and Smith look like they’re nearing the retirement home and McSweeney doesn’t look up to it
I think it’s too early to say with McSweeney. Only saw the highlights after play of the final session but it looked like the one he copped kept pretty low. He deserves a bit of time and the chance of batting in better conditions. Both digs he’s had a lot to contend with. The biggest concern really is Labushagne. You just can’t have your three looking completely bereft of any idea how to score a run.

Which meant it might have helped had Khawaja taken the first ball.

Sadly it also means there's an argument for picking Harris too.

The biggest concern with the McSweeney selection is that a middle order bat was asked to open. And it’s clearly not long before another opener will be required. A lot of pressure on Konstas to come good…

Is it true Marnus has reduced the back and across movement in the last few seasons? Just don't really understand why if it was working so well for him.

I don’t think there’s much pressure on konstas, there’s others around. There’s a bigger dearth of decent middle order players in shield cricket than openers tbh. But “decent” I mean guys with a bit of a record at fc level.

Even if the trigger was causing problems judging the position of his off stump, he has a record of being very good at his nicks not being caught. Would rather edgy Labuschange than what we have now.

Kohli also made a 70 odd in a meme pitch vs SA in SA

This was always on the cards

He will not score much as long as we play at home on tracks that turn from ball 1

It’s only one test

I predicted 2-2 because both batting lineups are fragile and there will be plenty of collapses
Oh I'm not the one to predict out a series based on a single game but there seems to be a massive gap in quality at the moment and unless Bumrah rolls his ankle or something, I can't see the Australian batsmen scoring any runs against at least in the next two venues and by that time the series will be done

On the other hand, Indian batters clearly showed today that they can dominate this Australian attack once the pitch flattened out

This game is gone obvs but it'd very important for Australia's sake that they make a good fist of it tomorrow and atleast show that they can score runs against Bumrah. They already looks massively mentally scarred and another meek 120 AO surrender would not help
