No major shocks with the bowling I don't think. Anderson and Hoggard bowled okay, but there's not a heap in this wicket for bowlers of that type. Anderson probably looked the most likely aside from that guy with the big head. Flintoff was exceptional as always, while Harmison was horrible.

Ponting looks in sensational touch early, that pull shot was a thing of beauty. Could be a really tough day for England if they don't get a wicket soon after the break, preferably Ponting.

I think it's worth remembering that one of the definitive factors in England's win last year was the principle of having runs on the board and applying pressure with disciplined bowling. In every one of the last four tests England batted first and made a good score, and Australia were always trying to catch up. It was a crucial toss this morning I think, and if Australia make 400+ it could set up the series pretty nicely.

BRILLIANT STUFF AUSSIES !!!!! couldn't be better... well it could if Hayden didn't go out

but can't blame Hayden... brilliant delivery... perfect delivery to a left handed batsman... atleast we made em work for the wicket

i love Langer :):) he has effectively thrown the first punch in this Ashes series.... GO JL u good thing!!!!

i was so peeved when Hayden got out... i was like ok... the 30's and the 70's are the dangers for our openers... my superstition again rolleyes.gif and we were at 79 when the wicket fell i was like grrrr Y AM I ALWAYS RIGHT
anyways i have a bad feeling 140's is the danger... i also felt a wicket may have fell before lunch :S when Ponting played that sweep off Giles i thought it hit the stumps lol i should be less paranoid...

anyways it seems a flat pitch... but i have a feeling its the perfect pitch for Australias bowlers.... and when they come out to bowl it won't seem flat trust me... i just hope our batsmen can kick on and get us to atleast an average score [350] then our bowlers will be brilliant...

McGrath and Clark will get steepling bounce and are both more accurate than any others of the English bowling attack... they WILL also seam it... Englands bowlers are either hit the deck bowlers or swing bowlers and thats why they are struggling a bit to consistently look dangerous...

Lee will always be dangerous...and on this wicket even more so ...he'll be the first bowler and maybe the only bowler this series to top 150km/h ...

and of course, Warney... will get lots of bounce and pace and well he can spin it everywhere

BRING IT BIATCHES!!!!!! Long batting lineup can't wait to see guys like Martyn Clarke play as well.... oh and Hussey... don't want to see Gilchrist today

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
I have a feeling Collingwood will get an over or two in before tea. Flintoff and Hoggard looked good, while Anderson seemed to straighten up after being woeful early.

Harmison...wtf?

Giles getting minimal turn in his only over, but it was turn, at least.

Won't see serious turn until Warne comes on lol. But for Giles, day 3 AT LEAST if not day 4.

I'm inclined to agree that this pitch won't seem so flat later in the match. The Gabba is always pretty sporting, there'll be lots of movement if there's ever cloud cover and humidity (although the forecast is clear), and McGrath and Clark will do fine on a quick pitch with so much bounce, much like Flintoff. It'd be a decent wicket for Harmison too if he wasn't absolutely woeful, and Warne loves the Gabba.

Lunch ends at 20 minutes to the hour, 1:40 local time.

What do people think of the hot spot camera thing? I didn't bother watching the cricket show since I knew they'd crap on about it for half an hour, but it is pretty cool. It'll probably be inconclusive a lot of the time, but it certainly looks like it could be helpful with edges, it only as a novelty thing.

Wicket definitely had more in it than was shown this morning - example is the ball that got Hayden, bounced and seamed

Unfortunately for England, all their bowlers look under-done but 2 quick wickets and it's even again.
