Why did Broad only bowl two 4 over spells and then come on for a trundle at the end when they were playing for stumps? 10 overs in 2 sessions for your second best bowler doesn't seem like enough at all.

Moeen had clearly lost his radar from bowling so much. Smith's 35-60 was basically gifted to him during that period when Woakes/Ball/Moeen were bowling.

Runs usually do seem to be gifted when Woakes is bowling.

I didn't get why Broad wasn't put on again immediately after tea. Mooen didn't bowl badly but the intensity seemed to drop even though Anderson was beating the bat at the other end. But Woakes and Ball's inability to exert the same pressure is definitely the biggest problem.

Havent had a chance to watch any of the tests so far but looking at the scorecard it's gone pretty much the way many expected, poor batting on both sides with some decent bowling thrown in.

I know it's a bit of a misleading cliche to talk about Broad's pace, but it really was well down in the evening session. He bowled pretty accurately and tidily, but hardly looked that threatening IMO.

My own thought is that England are trying to just stay in the game until the new ball and hope they can make inroads with a bit of movement. We aren't going to out blast Australia with bat or ball so I think the strategy is to stop Australia playing their normal game. It's worked for us in the past. Man for man Australia are the better team in Australian conditions, so trying to match the way Australia want to play will probably see us lose. I suspect Broad was just bowling to contain.

Plumb LBW not given. Good hard nothing shot push at the ball to nick off. There was literally NOTHING to suggest Smith would go on to be the run machine he is now.

If this fact insults you, complain away!
His unbeaten 50 amid the wreckage of the 2nd innings at Sydney was decent. As was his 80 odd against Pakistan months prior.

He'd also scored 4 tons in the 2009/10 Shield season and had a Shield average of around 50 at the time.

The 2010/11 Ashes showed that he wasn't ready for Test cricket, but there were enough raw ingredients there to suggest that he was worth persisting with once he'd gone back to First Class cricket and worked on his flaws. I don't think he was helped by being selected as a bowler in the shorter formats of the game either.

I think a few Shield watchers had already noted that he had an unusually good temperament for a batsman his age. Certainly on merit he should have been selected as a specialist batsman the previous summer IMO.

Smith needs another 235 between now and the end of the 4th Test to score over 1000 Test runs for the fourth year running.

Smith's truly is an inspirational story, from teenage warne-esque sensation to bit part player, to being dropped, to lower order ODI batsman to test stalwart...all that and his overall, cross format numbers and performances are starting to verge on the great. Good on him!
