but Manchester United weren't good enough to beat them either :p
Of course, as for all the USA ramblings - even in their country with their totally commercially orientated sports they still manage to play an unlimited number of periods of extra time, it's truly sad that football uses this "there's not enough time blah blah" crap as a motive to perpetuate the present lunacy of a penalty shootout.

I'd say that Nistelrooy trying to flick the ball in rather than smashing the back of the net off was the turning point.

Well done Arsenal, typical CDMs...

I didn't see much of it due to a cricket match, but from watching at the tea break, Horse didn't play too bad.

Now the dust has settled a little I think one can say it was the best final for some time. Man U, Rooney & Ronaldo in particular, played very well & made most of the running and Arsenal defended stoutly, most un-Arsenal like in fact.

It was a welcome change from the previous two when Arsenal & Man U dismissed Southampton & Millwall respectively with almost contemptuous ease. Certainly the best since 2001 for my money.

The 1996 final is one of my earliest sporting memories, and while not remembered for the match in general, the way it was settled probably makes it the most memorable that I have seen.

Lovely strike, turgid game tho.

I remember Andy Linegan's header in the the last minute of extra time to beat Wednesday in 1993 very fondly, but that was a dire game too. Two dire games actually as it was a replay.

My favourite (that I remember) is 1987, but that may be 'cos T*ttenham lost in extra time to an oggy! I'm sure Marc would agree too... :D

Aww crap!!! Dang!!! Lost!!! Sure would have liked to have seen it. The channel that's carrying it went on the blink. Just burns my britches.

Manure were robbed today, there was only ever one team in that game and they lost it. Penalties is never a good way to decide a cup IMO and today just reinforced that. I think they should make allowances for the possibilty of a draw and replay the match the next weekend.

As stated before, the CDMs go that extra mile, that extra 3 and a half pike, that extra sly elbow or kick, that extra 5 people to surround the referee, that extra whinge in the postmatch manager interview.
NObody surrounds a ref like Manure.
