now looking at @Jfry's, I feared that it was impossible to complete since he has to pick 2 from 1976-1985 and only had NZ, SA and minnows but had already picked Zimbabwe.

But it turns out Canada played the 79 WC so that should be something to at least complete the team:

I'm aware this is a meme amount of technicalities, but John Traicos represented SA in tests and made his ODI debut in '83, so we could be lenient and call him a SA player who made his ODI debut in 81 to 85, and then everything is alright.

Why pick Tilakaratne when you can pick Mahanama or little Kalu? The numbers don’t look great but they’re good options for this format plus they add something else like keeping or fielding.
