NZC - Not Impressed

Records show that since 1998 the Boxing Day test has had decreasing numbers of people turning up to watch. The Pakistan test last year failed to get anymore than 10 000 people over 5 days.
Richard Boock quoted that the South African test attracted double that of the Pakistan test in Wellington, suggesting that opposition is a big factor.

So whats the point anyway when the next 5 teams to tour here around Xmas are: Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka & then Pakistan?

The more I think about it..the more I think NZC are doing the right thing. Snedden is right that it's best to have the ODI's during the main holidays to try & maximise money as much as possible..because they don't make any money with the tests anyway.

No great protest from me as a Wellington fan. Getting 10,000 people into the Basin in late March proves its not just a date thing for a lot of us, and if anything the weather is more reliable for our anniversary weekend than just after Christmas.

My only real problem with Boxing Day will be to convince any family or relatives around to endure some of the test from Melbourne, when NZ's ODIs are on the other channel.

I agree with Tim, the opposition is a factor, and I don't thing that is limited to test matches only, i believe the same applies for ODI's.

Does Sri Lanka have the same appeal as Aust, SA, Eng? The answer is no, therefore they will be relying on the Boxing Day becoming a day where Aucklanders go and watch an ODI irrespective of who we are actually playing...just like what happened at the Basin with the Boxing Day Test.

Then again we seem to actually be quite good at this ODI stuff at the moment, maybe that will be enough to encourage people to go along.

All interesting stuff this...not sure there is a definitive right or wrong answer and NZC have gone with what they will think will work best, and hard to argue with that i suppose.
