Mike Atherton was another failed wrist spinner wasn't he ? But with his back, bowling was never going to be a major part of his cricketing days!
Atherton was always batsman before wristspinner, though - Hussain started playing the game as a spinner, then developed his batting, then became a specialist at it.

Atherton was always a batsman who bowled, and as you say, his back caused him to give it up when it worsened in late 1996.
