New Zealand doom and gloom thread

Yeah, tempting to view Hesson as having no more scruples than a Deep South Howsie these days. Vastly overrating the potential of Otago's working-class domestic heroes is really nothing new with him.

I didn't see that Hesson quote, that's marvelous .

Admittedly, De Grandhomme was elevated to an IPL gig and even more than that, game-time, so many of his peers may continue to dare to dream.

Well the key there is to become that Guinness Book of Records type of cricketer, whether it be Colin's 170 strike-rate in T20s, Milne's 153.2kph or Anderson's 100 off 36.

A crafty Auckland could host some T20 games at Mt Smart. After the 2018 IPL auction, they'd probably never have to pay Glenn Phillips another cent.

No surprises in that contract list except Broom maybe, but then again, Otago. Thank heavens for Ronchi's departure though would've been sweet revenge if that CT knock against the Aussies was a matchwinning one. As others have said, promised more as a test player and NZ could perhaps considered giving him the gloves and playing Watling as a specialist bat at no5, no6. Pretty good keeper but watching him bat you felt he hardly understood his game, so many brainless soft dismissals. Pity for such a great timer of the ball.

Still felt Jeets had a role to play in the test side (some encouraging signs in the South Africa series) but it's time NZ had a good hard look at the spin cupboard and how they intend to manage it.

I'm tempted to think it's a pay off for Broom giving up his English contract to play for us this season ... because surely he won't be a chance of making the side in the next 12 months, with this focus on younger players Larsen mentions? And I believe the list is meant to be picked on the likelyhood of making the side in the next 12 months.

Would be interesting to see his record since returning, minus Bangladesh and Ireland.

As for Patel, I still feel for him that he never got the chance to win us that South African test on the final day, it would have been a great way to go out.

Pros: Don't need to pay him
Cons: Washed-up millionaire at 24

Things I'll be looking at with interest:

Immediate term:
Who the replacement for Ronchi is (Blundell/Phillips frontrunners I suppose). Will they still pursue the idea of Latham being the limited overs keeper? And will they look at the new keeper as a possible understudy to Watling?
How to solve the problem of reduced output from Neesham/Anderson. I would hope they make full use of the upcoming domestic season given there are few international fixtures ahead.
What role they have in mind for Munro (beyond T20) given he is in the contract list.

Long Term:
Grooming a new top-order batsman as the future replacement for Taylor. Will Young maybe?
Managing the spin options and keeping them ready for whenever the next tour to the subcontinent/UAE is.
Finding a middle order batsman adept at rotating the strike and hitting out, Grant Elliott prototype.

Neil Broom and CDG will be irrelevant in two years time. Jeet Raval would be too if we had any other possible openers.
Unfair on Jeet, I said the same thing before he debuted but he showed more than enough application wise to think he can go okay long-term or at least 4-5 years at 30+.

Just a short Clarkson full innings there, if you're overseas and want to get a bearing on him in relation to the likes of Neesham. A pretty good reflection of the talent and the flaws, the slightly too rigid-bodied thrashing at the ball, you'd be getting with him at the moment.

Still fits the form of classic tall NZ all-rounder, so not unsurprisingly is set up to smash every ball back over the bowler's head like Chris Cairns, while other shots are an adjustment.

Amazing ball-striker at his age though tell myself not to get too excited - get back to me in 2020 if he hasn't had massive injuries that ruined his bowling .

I like that he has the sense to take a few balls and get himself in ... I have no idea what the situation of the game was in that video, but I think a few current NZ middle order batsmen could learn from that.

Mark Geenty and Fairfax really nurturing and nourishing cricket's grassroots with the hope of better Black Caps to come, as per usual.

Which is why international teams and national bodies have batting coaches, right? Looking forward to having one in NZ.
