I'm glad Wright is going to experiment with the batting order during this Pak ODI series.

I also hope they give Woodcock at least a couple of games. Taking an un-capped player to the WC is nuts.

The selection of Bennett is absolutely disgraceful and it amazes me that so few of you have bothered to mention it. Bennett's career 50-over stats are TERRIBLE. Once again, it appears the selectors have actually trawled the country intent on picking the player least equipped to do the job. It boggles the mind.
I'll ignore the weekend because that would make me a hindsight analyst, of which there seems to be plenty of already.

We're picking Bennett today, not last year, not 3 years ago, when he produced those statistics that you're so damning of.

Any mention of this season in the 1-day comp, where he's taken 7 wickets at 24 and an RPO of mid 4s? Those other years he was hampered by injuries and now he's had an extended run, he's showing himself to be one of the best pacemen going around.

Who would we rather pick? I can't think of any that I think are more deserving.

Bennett got those List A stats after the Bangladesh tour.

It may well have improved him as a bowler. A bit like McIntosh going from terrible to decent in List A after an international stint.

I was against Bennett's selection when he was first picked (wrong format), but since he's doing all right then he may as well stay. There are others far more deserving though. I'll list 'em just for lolz (excluding current Black Caps).

Michael Bates
Daryl Tuffey
Trent Boult
Graeme Aldridge
Joseph Yovich
Bradley Scott
Michael Mason
Mark Gillespie
Andy McKay
Andrew Ellis
Ian Bulter
Neil Wagner
Warren McSkimming

That's 13 seamers off the top of my head. There might be more. They've all done more domestically to deserve ODI selection than Bennett. His record before this season is terrible, and you can't select someone with only a few good games and call it deserved, it's a punt, no matter how you dress it up.

I don't mind punts, as long as they work. I prefer selectors to pick the players scoring the most runs/taking the most wickets. They can make punts, but if they don't come off then it was a big fat waste of time imo.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
8 wickets at 19 says he's been a decent punt thus far. Let's reserve judgement until the last warm up match has completed as to whether or not he should play in the WC.

Well I wouldn't have picked him in the squad but if he did well in the rest of this series and in the warmups I'd definitely be prepared to revise that opinion. However, there's no way he should be in the first choice eleven IMO. The bowling attack should so obviously be Mills, Southee, Oram, Vettori and McCullum at this point, with a bit of Styris and/or Franklin as a sixth option. I can't see the argument for anything else.

He'll be more than handy in the squad though, should one of those players goes down. Somewhat agree that he shouldn't be in the first eleven though.

While I don't really agree at this stage, I can definitely see the logic for it and I'd be willing to change my mind pretty quickly if he bowled well for the rest of the series against Pakistan and/or the warm-ups.

My only real issue is with people saying he should play ahead of Mills or Oram at full strength.

If Oram starts bowling wobblies and Bennett guns it this series, I can see a case for Bennett making the starting XI.

Oram needs to bat below at least NcCullum though.

Oram's form with the bat has been dire for ages but if he comes off it'll be well worth his spot at 7. Obviously he has to be selected based on bowling primarily at this point, but as far as his batting position goes, I think New Zealand do need that hitter at seven. I'd actually bat Mills at seven if Oram wasn't in the team because I think that firepower is important down the order in ODIs, particularly in the subcontinent.

I can understand the thinking behind having How in the squad. Back-up keeper and back-up opener all in one.
But do the selectors realise there's already 3 openers in the best XI?
Guptill, McCullum, Ryder.

-But, if McCullum gets injured who will keep wicket?
Peter McGlashan
-Ahh, that makes sense. But then who will be our finisher?
PETER ****ING MCGLASHAN!!!!

I thought it would be an interesting exercise to go and see what our guys and fringe players average with the bat domestically. It is very simplistic stats use, but a simple trawl through the stats showed some interesting stuff. Unfortunately I have no strike rates.

New Zealand List A Batting Statistics

Brendon McCullum: 31.20 (40 for Otago)
Martin Guptill: 42.92
Jesse Ryder: 20.80
Ross Taylor: 49.83
Scott Styris: 37.35 (cbf removing his period where he was a bowler)
James Franklin: 41.32 (36.22 for Wellington)
Jacob Oram: 29.49 (63 matches as well) (28.84 bowling)

Jamie How: 29.97 (75 matches, no hundreds)
Kane Williamson: 62.11
Grant Elliott: 42.42 (25.77 bowling)
Peter McGlashan: 37.34
Matthew Sinclair: 38.13
Peter Fulton: 37.21 (terrible conversion rate though. 2 centuries in 60 odd games)
Neil Broom: 41.70 (3 centuries in 60 odd games)
Michael Papps: 40.70
BJ Watling: 44.00
Peter Ingram: 31.55

Going on simplistic averages, and taking into account longevity, our ODI batting line up would be:

Martin Guptill
Michael Papps
Kane Williamson
Ross Taylor
Scott Styris
James Franklin
Brendon McCullum

Apparently Kane Williamson has a stomach infection or something and won't be flying with the team over to the subcontinent. He'll be going in a few days or something.

Have to admit his name was the first one to pop into my mind as well. Poor Jesse.

Honestly can't see Timmy being sent home. Will get a slap on the wrist and have to make an apology. Case closed.
