Anybody know the first batsman to open in one innings and bat #11 in the next? (Same match)
I know of the reverse happening in one case though not in the same match.

Wilfred Rhodes batted mostly in the lower order, 10 times at number eleven, till the 4th Test of the Ashes series at Sydney in Feb 1904 scoring 29 and 4 in a huge England win.

In the next Test, at MCG he opened the batting with Tom Hayward scoring 3 runs as England crashed to 61 all out. He was promptly dropped to number 8 in the second innings and Braund who took his place at the top scored a BLOB. Rhodes with 16 not out at number eight was one of the leading England scorers as they crashed to a marginally better 101 all out.

Rhodes went on to open 43 times for England, scoring two centuries including 179 in a record 323 run partnership with Hobbs at MCG in 1912. He averaged 36.7 as an opner but he had averaged 44.3 in his 8 innings at number although he never even reached that score of 44 EVER in his 8 innings at that place in the order !!

In fact before that 29 and 10 in that last innings at the bottom of the order, he was averaging 104 at number 11. Wish he had batted at number 10 in that Test at Sydney. Then statistical morons would understand the significance of not outs in batting averages.

Graeme Smith opened first innings against Australia at the SCG 2009 and then batted 11 in the next innings due to a broken hand.

Congrats!!

I'm a bit late to the party, however I believe I have your answer... Was reading one of my books (200 years of Australian cricket), which covers 1804-2004, and I highly reccommend it. It has scorecards for every test Australia competed in, so there is a slight chance it may have occurred earlier (England vs South Africa), but this was the earliest I saw.

1st Test: England v Australia at Lord's, Jun 22-24, 1896 | Cricket Scorecard | ESPN Cricinfo

Henry "Harry" Donnan, who ended up marrying Sid Gregory's sister, "batted practically with one hand" in the second innings, according to Wisden. This also happened to be the 50th Test match, and George Lohmann's last, as he died less than 5 years later, taking 3/13 and 0/39. It was also Clem Hill's debut, where he secored 1 and 5.

Harry Donnan was the answer I had :)

Ftr, seeing as I managed to get all 10 question in that quiz correct would anybody else like to have a bash and I'll let you know how you get on?

1. Which opening batsman scored the first run in Test cricket, scored the first century and was also the first player to become retired hurt?

2. How many ODI matches had Sachin Tendulkar played before his first go as opener for India?
3. Who is the only batsman to have opened the innings in Tests and never been dismissed?
4. How many times have teams won after their opening partnership scored nought in both innings?
5. Who is the only other opener apart from Virender Sehwag to bag a king pair?
6. The highest score to have been made by both openers in the same innings of a Test is 77. Which pair was it?
7. Who was the first player to open the innings in one innings and bat at No.11 in the other?
8. Who was the last opener to play for his national side before playing a first-class match?
