If Astill is also the answer, that is a remarkable coincidence - he wasn't the player I was looking for though. This man was also picked for a South African tour, late in his career.
Yes it IS remarkable.

Astrill took 1490 wickets in all FC matches before he was taken to South Africa in 1927-28 at 42 yrs of age.

1926-27	53
1926-27	18

In South Africa he took 14 wickets (not 7) before the first Test Match where he made his Test debut.

Code:
Orange Free 2
Natal 5
Natal 5
Transvaal	1
Transvaal	0
South Afr XI	1
So he actually tok 1504 wickets before his Test debut !!

James Southerton had taken even more - 1527 before he made his debut in the first ever Test match.

International Captain
Before I tackle that, a note about Ian Thomson: he played all five Tests of the 1964-65 series, but no other Tests in his career (he retired the following season). The only other England players I know who've done that are another Sussex man, Chris Adams, and the lob bowler RT Simpson-Hayward - all on tours of South Africa. But no doubt there are others.

Fred Trueman, left out of that tour, is said to have expressed his dismay, to put it mildly, that Thomson and Somerset medium-pacer Ken Palmer were opening the bowling for England.

Am I English?
Are they batting records?
Pre WWI cricketer?
Career end to sickness/injury?
Record(s) have anything to do with debut?

I hold at least one world record. I got my first taste of international cricket in an ODI which was the equivalent - in terms of overs bowled, to todays newer form of 20Twenty cricket. Who am I and what was the match?
