I wonder where SJS is? Since I don't know what the time is in India, there could be an explainable reason for him not replying.

Question

2 opposing captains in a test who had at least 2 exceptionally common things (may not have been necessarily present at the time of the Test)between them. Both illustrious in their own right !! One has a record that cannot be erased !!

No bryce. Since the next round has started I may as well give the answer. The bowler is Hugh Tayfield of South Africa. In 1953-4, he was hit for 25 (in an 8 ball over) by NZers Bert Sutcliffe and Bob Blair at Johannesburg. Three years later he set the record of bowling 137 consecutive balls without conceding a run (16 8 ball overs). If you have time read this link about Sutcliffe's innings in the 1953-4 match Link

oh yes i am actually familiar with this match, bob blair's wife died in the Tangawai Disaster(a famous New Zealand train crash) the day before and thats the reason he was so fired up.
bert sutcliffe was new zealands best batsman ever(maybe on par with martin crowe), if it wasn't for such a bad smoking habit he might still be with us today! He also is the only ever new zealander to have scored two First Class triple-centuries....damn there goes a future question lol

Thanks. :)

May I suggest that anyone who has guessed part of a question get it confirmed and this way it will be shared by others also. The idea, I feel, should noit be to BE the one to guess, but for all of us to jointly try and crack it fastest.

What do you say ?

(3) Was the Englishman knighted later, for his non-cricketing activities ?

(4) If yes, did he serve in India ?

Q 5 Has the common record got something to do with captaincy ? No. (Please read the question carefully !! :) )

Regarding his luck in winning the toss in those 1905 Tests , Jackson said that at Scarborough, when captain for the seventh time against the Australians: I found Darling stripped to the waist. He said, ‘Now we’ll have a proper tossing, and he who gets on top wins the toss.’ So I said to George Hirst, ‘Georgie, you come and toss this time.’ Darling then said, ‘All right, we’ll toss in the old-fashioned way!’ Again Jackson winning the toss.
