If no to the above, only then consider this - was he South African ?

Yes to the first one, he was English, and played CC

Confused? what we know

player A
is English
played in the 19th century (mainly CC) but did tour
did not play Test Cricket (but came close, even though he was not in the country)

player B
is Australian
did play Test Cricket between the wars
