STOP!!! Dont go any further, you're just embarrassing yourself here. Please pick up a history book of North India. Maharajah Ranjeet Singh had the Kohinoor at one time and invaded part of mighty Afghanistan (hence NWFP is in Pakistan now). Punjabi Maharajas were the last people to be conquered before the British successfully annexed India FFS!Tamil Nadu has been a land of kings and the people feel an affinity for their achievements, that was the reasoning behind Chennai naming their franchise so. Justified, imo.
Vijay Mallya of Kingfisher owns the Bangalore Royal Challengers, and 'Royal' is a brand name he owns and uses for many of his products. Perfectly valid and well reasoned branding.
Rajasthan and Punjab are the weird ones imo. I've never associated Punjab with kings, not any significant ones in any case, although I might be wrong on that count. Wannabes imo.
Its the 'Rajasthan' part of the Rajasthan Royals that grinds my gears. There were precisely two players actually from Rajasthan in their squad last year, and only one of them played any games for them. The most ridiculous grouping of players into a team ever.
Re: Knight Riders. I have an inkling SRK might have let his son name his team, its not the sort of name a grown up would come up with. The juvenility of the branding gives me a chuckle. Its actually a name my buddies and me were considering for our little scouts group in school a long time back, before we finally settled for the Holmes inspired 'Silver Blaze'
Punjab has 10x richer culture, history than Rajasthan. Maharaja Ranjit Singh's (The Quintessential Indus Man) Military General Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa conquered Kashmir, Multan, Peshawar and made Chamba, Kangra and Jammu bow before him. He extended his territories upto Ladakh and China and struck his coin there. He defeated the Afghans, something the British failed to do, and annexed a segment of what was the Kingdom of Kabul to the Maharaja Ranjit Singh's Kingdom.Long ago, Shashi Tharoor, the noted writer and columnist, said that he didn't approve of the names of the teams, since they keep going back to the time of royalty and kings. The days of royals and kings are gone, so there's no need to go back there. Not surprisingly, he's written off names like Royals, Royal Challengers, Kings and Super Kings. He's also not too pleased with the 'step back to feudal reign' with the Knight Riders. He's pleased with Deccan Chargers and Delhi Daredevils, but wished Mumbai had a better name than Indians.
I'd say that Rajasthan Royals (the name) is just right. After all, Rajasthan is a state known for its rich royal heritage and wonderful forts, which are now tourist destinations. Bangalore's Royal Challengers is a laughable attempt at brand promotion, though Vijay Mallya, owner of Force India F1, could have named it Force XI Bangalore instead. Chennai Super Kings is an appropriate name, but those kings were not too famous, and Chennai is now known more for its automobile, machinery and IT enterprises. Kolkata could have taken on 'Tigers' to refer to the Bengal Tiger, but that was already taken by another team from that rebel league.
Mumbai Indians, it seems, was invented so that they try to distinguish themselves from a football or basketball team. That's a very weird statement. My Dad said it's a statement to counter the regionalistic vigilantes in saffron, green and blue colours running riot over regional causes in Mumbai. I thought it's just their own way of indicating that they're the most Indian team around, unlike some others, who depend totally on foreign power.
Kings XI Punjab is one to snore through. Is that the only thing they're known for? What about Punjabi arts? The famous hydel power plant? Delhi Daredevils, though, is one name that we all like, since it's not too 'royal', and was influenced by Sehwag's dashing, dizzying batting. Deccan Chargers may be the best name among the teams, though jokes about it being something to get a mobile phone back on track still exist. My own take on Kolkata Knightriders would be not so much promotion of a new TV show never shown in India (not to be confused with its classic namesake that has been shown here very often), as much as another influence. The team in BLACK uniforms are called the KNIGHTriders (never mind one letter too many), and their theme tune sounds a lot like that Deep Purple song.
Ideal IPL names
- Chennai Sparkplugs/Chennai Pistons- A nod to the auto industry here
- Deccan Chargers- Nothing wrong with the name
- Force XI Bangalore- A nod to Vijay Mallya's other team
- Kolkata Knights- Not too far away, not too bad, though there are other options
- Rajasthan Royals- As said, royal heritage
- Punjab Torrents- Maybe the torrent in the rivers
- Delhi Daredevils- No problem
- Delhi Sultans- This should be the Ranji team's name
- Mumbai Blades- Their symbol looks like a wheelblade, so why not the name?
- Mumbai Lions- This is another alternative, a nod to Mumbai's Ranji mascot
Come to think of it, no need to waste our time with people like this. Some people just have an inferiority complex and have to overtly discredit people they actually admire underneath. The british, indian and pakistani govts in the past have tried to suppress Punjabi culture...look at it today, its still dominant and now influencing all of India. So if these govts were unsuccessful I dont think a few losers posting threads here and there will make a much of a differencePunjab has 10x richer culture, history than Rajasthan. Kings in Punjab team stands for lavish lifestyle, Punjab on both side of border is rich state, very fertile land, we spend on Jewellery/Bullet Bikes/Arms/Jeeps/marriages. Punjab has highest no. of Mercedes sales in India.

You know our contribution to Indian Army, only Gurkha's can match us. Punjabi's alone make 15%-20% of expat Indians. 1983WC winning team had 1/2 squad was Punjabi.
What has Rajasthan achieved? Except stealing our water? Except Vasundra Raje corruption and Gujjar reservation clashes?
Food wise we have slight edge over Rajisthani's (We're better in Non-veg variety), In Music, we are miles ahead.
You also mentioned Forts, Punjab has 10x more forts including U.N. World Heritage sites. Its just Congress hates us, we already got partitioned many times, our quota of river water is stolen, Even Chandigarh is disputed (we dont have right to say it our own).
King Porus was Punjabi
Other suitable names for Punjab team - Chak De XI (Chak de phattey was a war cry) or Sarson Saag XI or Thandi Lassi XI or Tandoori Nights XI or Punjabi Gabroo XI (Gabroo=Jawaan) or Punjabi Soormay.

What are the Tamil kings achievements.....apart from mass dosa production?
Hate to fall for the obvious bait but can't remember seeing any architecture of that quality in Punjab.
Yeah, agree that the Golden Temple is a great monument, though I'd hardly use the list of visiting celebrities as any indication of its architectural intricacy. But then I wasn't the one saying something idiotic like "Punjabi rulers have done nothing but popularise Bhangra". And no, I certainly don't consider expansion and size of an empire as any indication of how good the rulers were.
architecture......yes because after all that is the better reflection of a kings empire as opposed to successful conquests of neighbouring lands. Anyway even if it was, why is it that Queen Elizabeth, Dalai Lama, Barrack Obama make it amongst their priorities to visit the Golden Temple Amritsar? Why is it that after the Taj Mahal, the Golden Temple is the most recognized architecture of India worldwide?
Kings Xi is the bare minimum we deserve to be called, you guys are the real wannabes in my opinion!
anyway I'm gonna stop going any further, because I dont want to offend the GOOD people that exist in Tamil Nadhu. However, the posters here can exclude themselves from that list.

Not to feed a parochial discussion or to defend the "Chennai super kings" name, but in the interest of a history lesson: You might want to read up about the Cholas and Rajendra Chola.architecture......yes because after all that is the better reflection of a kings empire as opposed to successful conquests of neighbouring lands.
Ha ha, good one actually. The elephant is a prominent animal motif in India / subcontinent - so much so that the mascots for this cricket WC is one (as was the one for the 1982 Asian games in Delhi).Bangalore Bears
Chennai Champions
Deccan Chargers

Kerala Elephants [Keralaphants]
Kolkata Knight Riders
Mumbai Masters
