Most inconsistent player

Crazy thing is, he actually bowls well far more often in stereotypical "spin-friendly" conditions than he does in conditions which favour seam, swing, bounce etc.!
Just check his series-by-series averages. They make hugely odd reading for a seamer.
I think its a confidence thing. He is comfortable with spin friendly conditions because he has bowled on them all his life. He was not brought up on seamers pitches so does not know what to do on them, and then losses confidence

Interesting that. I guess he is used to the home conditions and has been able to adapt.

If you can exploit dry, flat wickets you can exploit seaming ones. If you can bowl reverse-swing you can bowl bowl conventional-swing. We've seen plenty of times that he can bowl them, anyway.
It never seems to me to be a confidence thing, indeed there have been times when the country steretype would have it that seam and swing is needed (eg England in 2002) but in fact his normal Sri Lanka-type bowling is of requisite.
Even if it is confidence, he's still infuriatingly inconsistent!

You didn't forget him, Craig - you quite correctly surmised that he isn't inconsistent at all - he's just very, very poor.

For me its:
Sehwag/Laxman (ODIS)
Sami/Akhtar/Youhana
Jayawardene
Astle/Mcmillan
Sarwan

For others already discussed:
AA - he isn't inconsistent, he is a mediocre bowler who sometimes has flashes of brilliance, and a poo batsman, who again can come up with a few god innings once in a while
Vaas - he is very consistent in sub-continent, and mediocre outside. He is a different bowler in and out of SL, and cannot be called inconsistent, just that he isn't perfect, else he would hv been one of the great bowlers of current era.
Afridi - IMO he just not good enough for any batting. All his runs come from mindless slogs, and I am yet to see him play a proper innings. So IMO he is just rubbish, but can time the ball well on occasions.

Akhtar/Youhana
Youhana isn't inconsisent - he's just very, very good against the weaker teams (average 200 against Bangladesh, for instance) and less good against the stronger ones.
Shoaib - very good, somehow managed to forget him.

Vaas inconsistent????? Some comments really surprise me. And as for Afridi, he should play as a bowler and bat 8 or 9. He's never been a good batsman

Richard isnt the only person who has labelled Vaas as inconsistant...

I havent checked myself, but I think you might be surprised if you looked at his stats more closely..

Vaas is one of the most inconsistent players in the world.

I love Chaminda's bowling to bits, I think he's a fantastic bowler at his best, but his inconsistency is infuriating.
If he bowled at his best more often he'd be the greatest bowler the planet had ever seen.

Just did a cricinfo search on Vaas and found some interesting stuff...

Chaminda Vaas:

- For a period of 40 test matches spanning between 95/96 and 01/02 Vaas failed to take a five wicket haul in the one innings.
- Vaas has played 15 from 80 matches against Zimbabwe, at an average on 27. This is more matches then he has played against Australia, England, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa and the West Indies.
- Against India, Vaas has an average of 53
- New Zealand and West Indies are the only countries Vaas has really got a hold of, although he has only played 11 tests against them both at an average of 20.

Mathew Sinclair is another.

If he can get past 30, he has ability to make big scores (ie 150+), problem is he gets out under 30 quite a lot.

afridi: agreed, he doesn't seem to be maturing as a batsman, and shouldn't be used in the top order anymore. but i believe 8 or 9 is too low for him.

If i was a captain, i would be batting him in the 35-40 over stage. So whatever position he needs to bat to achieve that... however, that is for a normal game, if the scoring needs a boost early, i would bat him higher etc.

having said that though, there is the advantage of the fielding restrictions which he can take advantage off in the first 15 overs...

he should be moved around depending on the quality of the opposition bowling attack

he should b in the team on the basis of his bowling which is working out quiet well for him atm.

Yes he is. Perhaps you've misinterpreted the word 'consistency'.
Or perhaps i haven't. Sometimes he is absolutely amazing, other times he is pretty good but nothing special. So i suppose he is not consistently brilliant but the way i see it for someone to be called inconsistent they generally tend to be brilliant on some days and absoloute rubbish on other days. Vaas rarely bowls terribly
