and its not possible at all that smith can be boring is it?
what goes around as your opinion doesnt necessarily mean that everyone else shares the samething about how boring a cricketer is.
Of course it's possible - but I was a little surprised that Smith could do something that anyone would define as boring. He's certainly not a slow scorer.
Some explanation from skd would be interesting.

Was it not the 10s and 20s?
Well he started in 1905 (and of course played for 31 years - 26 if you exclude The War), and I was referring to the starting decade.
His Test-career was indeed the 10s and 20s, though.
And one hell of a player he must have been, to average 47 in the days he played - starting at 18 and ending at 49.
But he was renowned as an incredibly slow batsman, and from stuff I've read (and occasionally watched) he could have been Chris Tavaré in a mirror.

The question wasn't 'most boring' batsman as this thread seems to have become. I'm not all that enthusiastic about his batting but neither would i claim him to be the most boring batsman. But his all round demeanor makes him come accross to me as the most boring cricketer. His tactics as captain are hardly exciting, he looks dull in the field and is hardly enthralling in interviews.

I've liked some of his interviews - anyone else got the Headingley Test programme for last year?
Yes, his captaincy is very simple and orthodox, and if that bores you, well, that's entirely your opinion of course.
So you'd consider him less boring if he weren't captain?

I don't think I know of a louder guy on a cricket pitch.. Maybe Jonty and Merv Hughes' ar$e would come close..

With the bat he scores at pace, and his girlfriend is a Miss South Africa..

Makahya Ntini. Unless he has his own personal stump mic attached! He is the only thing that will put me off watching the cricket fest in SA this christmas!

I like Trish Pollock better, and I certainly like Neil McKenzie's girlfriend and sister better.
That's another of the downers about him being out of the Test and ODI sides. :(

Tavare gets my vote.

After making 35 in 5 1/2 hours at Madras in 1981/82, he commented, 'I don't actually enjoy Test cricket that much.'

For a moment I thought I saw to Vengsarkar on that list. I was really shocked.

Then closer examination showed it was someone else I hadnt heard of. Thank God :D

Most boring Test series I have seen where England's tour's of India and Paksitan, bored me.

Most boring cricketer? My vote goes to Alec Bannerman, the brother of Charlie Bannerman (the first ever Test centurian), who played in the very first Test match back in the 1800s took the best part of over two days to get his highest ever Test score of 94. Boring!

Then again Trevor 'the barnicle' Bailey is another.

You see, I really enjoyed certain parts of both series.

Moin Khan has been pretty loud the times I recall seeing him. Especially with Saqlain bowling.
