It was faultless.vic_orthdox said:While I don't believe that Ponting is tactically all that much chop, what he has been pretty good with so far is in the use of his bowlers (on most occassions) - which I guess is something that you can often plan beforehand, but that part of his captaicy (as far as I can remember) has been pretty hard to fault - and was exemplified last night.
After three games of getting belted by the openers Vaughan handed Aus the start they wanted by opening the bowling with Gough. A very poor decision. He had other options but went for the proven failure.luckyeddie said:It was faultless.
Funnily enough, so was Vaughan's.
.
Funnily enough, I could have predicted that would be your comment.Scallywag said:After three games of getting belted by the openers Vaughan handed Aus the start they wanted by opening the bowling with Gough. A very poor decision. He had other options but went for the proven failure.
I was going to mention the no-ball but decided not to because when Trescothic was out to a no ball it was made very clear that had it not been a no-ball then it would not have resulted in a wicket.luckyeddie said:The fact that Gilchrist was 'bowled' by Gough in the first over, however, proves that your initial argument lacks a little credence. Still, that hasn't stopped you in the past, has it?
I didnt blame Vaughan for picking Gough only for opening the bowling with him. Had Ponting opened with Dizzy I would question his reasons for doing so.luckyeddie said:Funnily enough, I could have predicted that would be your comment.
Given that Gough was in the team, he was only there to open (pulled after 2 overs) and also to bowl at the death. If Gough's inclusion was at Vaughan's insistence, then obviously your point is valid. However, although the captain will have some input, he isn't the entire selection committee, or I could be blaming Ricky Ponting for picking Mullet, who frankly has made Darren Gough look positively brilliant.
Yeah, that often gets overlooked.Scallywag said:Ponting insisting that Symonds be on the team for the world cup was ingenious.
That's when it caught on and everyone tried to copy it but it had been done before then.chipmonk said:Arjuna Ranatunga installing Jayasuriya and Kaluwitharana toopen in ODI's for the 1996 World Cup, effectively turning the ODI batting stratergy known untill then "Turn on its Head".
Well NZ did not have the amount of success that Arjuna had. And it was Ranatunga who wanted both openers to be Explosive batsman. It was tried before mostly with One hitter batting with a specialist opening batsman.Blaze said:That's when it caught on and everyone tried to copy it but it had been done before then.
For example NZ did it at the 92 world cup with Mark Greatbatch
yeah, Srikkanth was very much the 80s Greatbatch, and he opened with a specialist like Gavaskar or Shastri...Legglancer said:Well NZ did not have the amount of success that Arjuna had. Or maybe Solanki had to be used because England collapsed?Scallywag said:Ponting in the last ODI against England.
He completely bamboozled Vaughan into taking an extra bowler and using the supersub for a batsman. Ponting then elected to bowl so Vaughan had to drop Jones without using him to let Solanki bat.
