Mohammed Azhuruduin vs Mark Waugh

I just can’t figure out why Mark Waugh struggled so much in Tests. Even in games where he scored runs it looked like he was surviving by some luck. He was sublime in the more entertaining format of the game, so I suppose he had his priorities right.

I though it was the complete opposite for most of the time tbh. Looked amazing before throwing it away

I remember thinking he was just being too defensive at times and looked susceptible to edging one as a result. I think opening the batting in ODIs brought out the best of him. Loved his cover drive where he just seemed to caress the ball for 4.

Mark Waugh for me. He had several great performances against truly formidable attacks and often when his team was under pressure.
Azhar (to my eyes) was more talented, and his batting was more beautiful to watch, and when in flow he just looked unstoppable.
For a large part of his career though, Azhar was accused of lacking courage against hostile pace bowling (particularly West Indian attack of the 80s and early 90s), but I think his counter-attacking 100 against Allan Donald & co in Eden Gardens in December 1996 gave him a lot of confidence. Unfortunately for him though, match-fixing scandal broke out not too long after and his cricketing career was over.
Mark Waugh was definitely greater of the two for me because of his several great innings against great attacks.
