This has such a Trumpy vibe to it.

Get accused of something done years ago

Deny vehemently

"I love Muslims. I know lots of Muslim people. Some of my best friends are Muslim"
this is actually the bit that stood out to me. the "defence" that apparently was claimed was laughable to the point of being obviously insincere, as was the "part-timer" claim, which is just absurd. at least "maa ki" sounds a bit like monkey.

In Moeen's defence (not that he needs one), the few times I've had something derogatory or discriminatory said/done to me, I did not immediately feel like telling people what happened. It's not a pleasant memory to re-live, and you just feel embarrassed and hurt more than anything else.

Reporting it would involve repeating it to several people, therefore reliving that incident and how it made you feel. And then what if the guy whose said it comes out and vehemently denies everything? What if there is no stump mic audio, or anyone around who heard to back you up? Now you've got to prove that you aren't just crying wolf and making false accusations. Suddenly you're on trial for the abuse you suffered.

And worse, what if you do report it, and it's investigated, but no action is taken? You've got to take the field with this same person again, and have re-lived that awful moment so many times...that's not good for your mental or emotional health.

So yea, I don't think Moeen is lying (you'd have to be a special type of sicko to lie about this), and I understand why he would wait for time to pass till he felt comfortable sharing this. Maybe whoever said it has retired (or is banned...), and maybe he just doesn't want to make this a big deal and move on with his life. I don't think 3 years ago he thought 'wow, this would be a great anecdote to share to help me sell my first book, i'm locking this away and busting it out when there is money to be made'. I just think that he had the opportunity to share his stories, and he felt comfortable enough now to share that this happened. And fair play to him.

FMD is there anything more annoying than when obviously racist trash is defended by people trying to say ‘but what about the white version’

There isn’t one for a reason you ****ing muppets.

‘I have never experienced racism and am not personally offended by it.’ - well ****ing good for you

Realistically it's inconceivable that a bloke like Moeen can have got through a cricket career without a few cracks along the way like that - as the rise of UKIP proved the UK is full of xenophobes and racists and I can't imagine Australia is much different - and after all the fuss about sledging in recent years if Moeen hadn't mentioned it in his autobiography he'd doubtless have been criticised for the omission instead

Presumably the reason he felt the need to call out Australia was that it was the only team that still did it at an international level, after which you would expect club cricket trash to have long since departed.
