Mitch Marsh

International Debutant
Dont understand how he got 46 tests. Easily the worst player for Aus greater than 45 Tests. I cant name a single worse example for Australia.

There were worse players yes, but nobody got that many test caps. Selectors are just a bunch of crooks. :thumbdown

Hes not even in the best 30 bats in the country.

He averaged close to single digit in 4 tests this series. Even a tail ender like Boland, or Lyon, is better, they occupied the crease more today for example.

Hes gotten atleast 20 tests too many. Either play a specialist bowler that bats a tad(e.g. Abbott or Neser when he returns from Injury) or a proper all rounder in his place(e.g. Webster), would assist the team balance, and move up Carey to no.6.

The only batsman to have played 40 tests for Australia with a lower batting average than Marsh was Sydney Gregory who played pre-WW1 and died in 1929.

Only three other players have taken 25+ wickets over 40+ tests at a worse average than Marsh - G Chapell, Simpson and M Waugh. All of whom had batting averages over 40.

It's fair to say that Mitch Marsh genuinely is the worst Australian player in over 100 years to have played over 40 tests.

Farrk. I knew it. Thanks for the stats.

I don't get it. Far better players got fewer tests than Marsh.# Weak era

Marsh likely ends his career with batting stats of- 80 INN @ 28.58.
Bowling average of 51 wickets @ 40, from 74 innings

this is atleast twice too many Tests given. what a gift from AUS selectors to the opposition..

One of the worst all rounders, in the history of this sport, to play more than 40 test matches surely.

More than 100 years, I would say in Australia’s test history. Gregory was quite a decent player (not great) who was a mainstay of the side for 20 years.

An average of 24 in the 90’s and 00’s is far more impressive than a modern 29.

This is it.

I'm not one of those people complaining about players running the team and **** like the Facebook comments of any cricket post but this is an example of it working to the detriment of the team. He's only there because of the boys club. There's probably 50 players more deserving in the country right now than this pelican. But he's funny in the Fletch and Hindy interviews so he keeps his spot.

Simple reason: in a stronger era of Australian cricket he would not have got near the Australian Test team during the 1990s through to about 2010. He wouldnt have been good enough to get picked. Currently and the past ten to fifteen years its been weak era of Test cricket.

yep its happening in tennis as well. all the big 3 tennis players are gone or past it(e.g. djokovic). And as a result theres some really bad players in the top 10 or top 20.

This is the era of the fifth bowler, so average players who "can" bat and bowl reasonable seam can get caps. I assume Cameron Green would be playing instead if fit, but then you never know. What's Beau Webster's bowling like? Capable of taking wickets at this level?

definitely capable. he had a sobers level season in FC. 30 + wickets and 900 runs apparently. He shouldve been selected for the first game.

It looks like he's bowled a lot more in the latter part of his career and found a way to drive down a pretty mediocre average. As a 5th bowler control and tightness are important too of course. He played at our club during one of his three years of English club cricket. Surprised he wasn't picked up by a county sooner as he did very well in his brief tenure at Gloucs.

Green would be in the team regardless tbh, he was the most in-form batsman over the year prior to this series.
