Minnows

The minnows are making waves in this World Cup. There is a genuine chance that new teams/minnows will qualify over established test nations in all the 4 groups.

Afghanistan over New Zealand
Scotland over England
USA over Pakistan
Bangladesh/Netherlands over SriLanka

I think this T20 world cup that way has been great in spreading cricket outside of the main countries and this could be the starting point for a 50 team world cup in a decade or two. Thoughts?

Yeah, I think we're still a little way off being able to increase the number of teams much beyond the current number. Look at Uganda, for example - their bowling and fielding has been solid, but the batting has been hard to watch.

Yeah, I am surprised how they won over Zimbabwe to qualify for the World cup. Still being a test nation, they should be seething that there are 20 teams playing and they are not one of them.

I think 20 is fine but they need to restructure how they get to 20 teams . All 12 test nations should have automatic places in tournaments as a reward for having a FC system and making attempts to play the highest form of the game. It's easy to just play T20 cricket and get foreigners from all over the world to play in your team without serious development within.

Let the reward for having an FC system be access to a viable Test match championship. Uganda got where they are because they built the second (or third) best t20 team on the African continent. Some squads may take the short cut of gaming eligibility rules, but in the long run, the nations with the best t20, List and FC development programs end up with the best T20I, ODI and Test teams respectively.

It’s gateway to becoming a full member and more funding, I’m not sure the test matches themselves are the carrot here unfortunately

Puleese! This just goes to show what a **** **** of a lottery this format is. Teams that couldn't begin to compete with the regular 10 nations in any other format are in it due to the vagaries of weather, crap pitches and whatnot. This is the soccer equivalent of condensing the game down to the penalty shootout.

I agree i would like to see the ICC keep the format or at least add new teams (4 groups of 6?)
