What are you talking about Maestro ?? The guy hit 8 sixes in that innings in some of the cleanest hitting ever seen under pressure!!

Ponting is just a beautiful striker of a cricket ball and always has been. If you'd ever seen of heard about his golfing skills, it would make more sense to you.

Hmm does that innings just prove his theory he hit 8 sixs in that innings.

Compare that to his other big hundred:
123 v SRL (96) - 1 six
145 v ZIM (98) - 1 six
124* v Pak (98) - 0 sixs
129 v RSA (02) - 1 sixs
141 v NZL (05) - 5 sixs

When i first heard this i thought the MCC had no idea what their on about, then i saw this and maybe they have a point.
he only started using the graphite bat for boxing day this year. its a bit strange though, because gillespie had one but for some reason doesn't use his ever.

Is there a reason why the English team (or any onther players) can't use a bat with graphite inserts?

If Gillespie comes out and starts hitting 6's all over the place, racking up 100's and 100's THEN I'd be a bit suspicious! :D

Well Gillespie hit two Test 50's in a season when he had the graphite bat in his kitbag with his 'normal' bats. Chance? You be the judge!

Realistically, this graphite thing has the potential to be a great innovation; I personally would welcome ANYTHING which makes a $600+ bat last longer!

Yeah i know i just wanted to see Sallywag have a wing :p

It interesting but how is changed his game as batsmen, or evolved as a batsmen, prior to 2001 the most sixs he hit in his ODI 100s was 1 then he started hitting 4-8 in most his big scores. I don't think it has to do with his bats, just the improvements in his game.

I think it bears further examination.

I watched a show on the battle of Agincourt the other day, and one of the reason the longbows were so good was that they used a couple of different types of wood, one strong but rigid, the other flexible and the combination gave the bow the best of both. It's possible that the graphite does add in a similar way, even if it's 'just' allowing a 'better' type of wood that wouldn't otherwise be possible.

I also read ( link below ) that this is the start of a broader campaign concerning the integrity of bats, and as such should be encouraged.

If bowlers have to get their actions checked in a lab, I see no reason why batsmen should have to submit their bats for testing, indeed, I would say it'd be less trouble than the bowlers go through...Every time they get a new batch of bats, they randomly send 1 off for testing.

hahaha, maybe you only score 50's if one of your normal bats has been acquainted with a bat with graphite inserts (a bit of a masking technique), but go well over the hundred mark if you use the bat itself!

To truly protect the ball we should make the bats out of chamois, so it gets shined every time it comes off the middle.

Well, this raises an interesting point; if the normal bats are being affected by the graphite, does this give them an illegal advantage? So this is what happens when talent 'rubs off' on something else? If that's the case, I'm cutting off a lock of Punter's hair next time he's in town.

Although, in the case of the bats, this may have an adverse affect. What happens if a normal bat starts thinking it's a graphite bat, but then realises it can never achieve the lofty heights a graphite insert requires? If you are using equipment that is depressed won't form suffer?

I think this again raises the issue of drugs in sport - urine testing for bats may be the only way forward.

Bit of an over-reaction on the MCC's part...

Some people might even go as far as wanting to take it to court. 8-)

Ponting's bat gets approval

Cricinfo staff

April 22, 2005

Ricky Ponting's bat has received approval from both the International Cricket Council as well as the Australian board. The go-ahead came after the MCC kicked up a minor storm by suggesting that the thin carbon graphite strip that runs down the back of his bat gives Ponting an added advantage.

Peter Young, Cricket Australia's spokesman, said that the technical committee of the board felt that the new-age sticker running down the back of the bat did not in any way enhance its performance. Sam Halvorsen, Ponting's manager, termed the whole issue as "absolute nonsense". He told The Australian newspaper: "It's just part of the livery, it's not performance-enhancing."

Rob Elliot, the managing director of Kookaburra, said that Ponting's bat met all the criteria. "In cricket the balance between bat and ball is critical," Elliot said. "Golf and tennis have lost their way with the new technological advances in clubs and racquets. We understand more than anyone how important the fundamental elements of bat and ball are in cricket."

Ponting began using the bat in late December last year and cracked a fantastic double century against Pakistan in the New Year's Test in Sydney. He carried on the momentum with a hundred in the tsunami-relief game before tearing the New Zealand attack to shreds in the recent series.

Well, let me cast you back to season 2003/2004 (or was it 02/03... im f**ked if i can remember), where Ricky Ponting, before this "reinforced" bat, decided to plant his front foot down the wicket and smash a pull shot well over the fence at the MCG and into the construction site.

No power, huh??

About the flourescent nonsense, what about some of those grips that Flintoff used last summer. IIRC, they were quite bright. i am an english supporter but isn't that abit of double standards

there certainly is an advantage to the graphite bat...while the bat kicks a$$ and beats it to a pulp, nothing really happens to the bat, and that is unfair :)

I think the desired result has been achieved, Kookaburra have sold out of the bats in England and the advertising has boosted sales thanks to the MCC.

Kookaburra will be very pleased with Pontings endorsement.

I can't help being amused by some of the articles which suggest this is an attempt to destabilise the Aussies with The Ashes coming up - like anyone would stoop as low as some of the Aussies.
