I think this one is extremely close. I might just barely go for Root, except that Hayden is already being unjustifiably thrashed in the poll, so will go Hayden.

I really rate both these players though. Real batting driving forces for both of their teams.

Hayden did average 50 as an opener while Root averaged only 40 when batting in the top 3. Its very close.

I'm no longer as dogmatic about "orderings". I'd have them all roughly perform very similarly in terms of value added as batsmen (with very high variances for all, once again because they're batsmen).

Just to throw away the sense that I'm insufferably fence-sitting here, I will say I think that both are in the lower end of the ATG grouping of batsmen, imho.

I would say V. Richards, Miandad, Tendulkar, Hayden, Kallis, Root all belong in the same category, which resides below the very tip top category of modern batsmen, which for me includes Gavaskar, Lara, Sanga, and S. Smith.

Root is significantly underrated here. He has difficult home conditions, and additionally gets the unfair bump down on the forum that guys like Steyn (I remember even when McGrath was playing / just retired he got this here too ) get just because their career is not wrapped up / in recent memory.

You've got to give a few years for the rose colored glasses to calibrate, then he'll be celebrated for what he was worth ( probably ).

Home conditions are a fair point since they’re tailormade for clouderson. Let’s see how the rest of his career goes. Could have a pretty bad decline since he’s forced to play aggressively by bazball

Hayden a good player of lateral movement? Not at all.

Root overall, and I doubt if the comparison is legit here even.
