Matt Prior retires

Adders

Cricketer Of The Year
Would he have displaced Buttler?
Prior at his best??? Absolutely no question about it in test cricket. I don't think Butler is the finished product by a long shot but he has a long way to go before he can be compared with Prior in test cricket.

Prior was a **** to get rid of when he used to have those troll partnerships with the ridiculous English tail. Worst feeling as an opposition fan.

Think you could make a case for Buttler batting in the top six if we still had a fit and firing Prior

In fact I think Brumby did just that

Was the best in the world at his job by a distance for several years. Probably one of the best packages as a keeper bat ever. Definitely somewhere in the top ten at least.

King Pietersen

International Captain
Excellent batsman that took the game away from opposing teams regularly, especially when he was at his best, played so many vital innings. He did well towards the end of his career to make his keeping decent too. Was nowhere near International standard when he first came in, but became a very passable Test keeper. Should never have played as many LO's games for England as he did though.

International Debutant
Buttler is probably a better keeper than Prior was at the start of his career. Prior went from dreadful to very very good at the peak of his career. I have no doubt Buttler will improve leaps and bounds as well.

For most of Priors career he was a top 6 bat in the country and could easily have played without the gloves. Similar to Buttler now.

As soon has his Achilles started to go he dropped off which would happen to any keeper.

There is IMO no place for specialist wicket keeper who'll only bat at a 25 average in the modern game. Buttler will probably have a couple of **** games behind the stumps at some point and everyone will be "call for Foster!" But they should stick with him.

If England comtinue to use Moeen as a frontline spinner and continue with Stokes at 6 then they can afford a specialist keeper at number 8.

it depends on the balance of your team. england could do it if they wanted. it's just modern convention that your #7 must average at least 30 and your #8 at least 20-25. if you had a cairns or flintoff at #7 and another bowling allrounder at #8 you could slip in your bunny keeper lower down if you wanted.
