Glamorgan pull off first genuine win this season

New Glamorgan manager James Stedman has had a tough time of it so far but today his troops made their best performance of the season to beat Colts by 10 wickets.

After winning the toss and electing to bat the top order batted well together and got the team off to to a strong start. Head, and van Jaarsveld both passed 50 as they put Glamorgan into a commanding position at 1/130. Head was then caught behind and W Dial came out to conquer the troublesome pitch. van Jaarsveld fell shortly after followed by debutant Dhasinka Wickramasinghe who fell for a second ball duck. Suddenly Glamorgan were in a spot of bother with two new batsmen at the crease.

Dial and Chandana then steadied the ship, batting themself in before letting lose. Both had passed fifty and put on 108 for the fifth wicket before Chandana was given out for 55. Replays later showed that the Sri Lankan got a faint inside edge but he'd done his job.

Dial and Cole then continued proceedings with Dial looking likely to hit the first century of the season. Pressure got to him though as he fell just 2 runs short, cutting into the gully. Cole then batted with the tail to take the total passed 400 and send Colts in.

Fazil and Agarkar bowled a testing first spell and the top order just weren't up to the challenge. They struggled to 3/45 before Chandana was brought into the attack. The legspinner had been the best performer for the Welsh-based side this season and today was no different. Together with Bucknall, playing his first game of the season they got through the middle order and left Colts 8/103.

Gordon then came into the attack and within one over he had the batsmen all out for 295 short of the total set by the Glamorgan batsmen. Strauss then enforced the follow on and after Fazil claimed Butt early it looked as if the job would be done without having to bat again. Colts then lifted as Troughton fought hard and long. Madanagolpin, Prosser and Razzaq also batted hard but were never in real control. At 4/178 Glamorgan expected to finish it off but complacency took over and alongwith some fine batting got Colts back into the contest. Troughton battled on for his century and then played the supporting role for Darden who took after Fazil. Agarkar eventually found the edge of Troughton's bat and broke the partnership. The pair put on 149 for the fifth wicket and got Colts right back into the contest.

Andrews then supported Darden to his century before he fell victim to Upul Chandana who battled long and hard and deserved his victim, sneaking one through Darden's defenses. Gordon got rid of Andrews with a screaming yorker and Chandana cleaned up the final 3 for almost nothing setting Glamorgan 139 to win. Chandana finished the match with figures of 7/108 and was the pick of the bowlers yet again.

Restricted by time Strauss didn't hesitate before going after the attack. The out of form captain hit the ball very well and got priceless time at the crease on way to a fine 90*. Head was good support and Glamorgan got home with 10 wickets to spare

Glamorgan 8d/408 & 0/139

Colts 111 & 433 (f/o)

I won because the other team forfeited despite playing out their first innings, and my side getting bowled out for combined less, I think...

Auckland Shattered By Last Over Miscue

The dismal Auckland bowling attack continued to struggle, but a tremendous effort from allrounder Kevon Godwin redeemed his team. Opening the batting, Godwin scored two hundreds, including an unbeaten second innings 104, which took Auckland to the seat of victory, as scores were dramatically level when the game was cruelly called.

Victoria batted first on a paradise of a pitch, and eased to 485 all out behind an opening stand of 185. Matthew Elliott scored a well-timed 152, as only Hayford Terbrugge (4/95) made a meaningful impact for Auckland. In reply, Godwin and Burley stroked hundreds to anchor a total of 463 all out.

The Victoria bowlers stuck to their tasks manfully, sharing the wickets nicely. Batting for a second time on a fourth day pitch, the Victorians were met with more of a struggle. Alex Tudor found rhythm for 5/48, whilst Godwin took 2/23 to end with a match haul of 4/114. Mike Hussey's 49 proved the top score of the innings, as the declaration came at 215/9.

Set 61 overs to bat and a target of 237 to acquire, Godwin and Ali were positive in adding 90 for the first wicket. The latter was caught of the top edge, then Jack Smith entered and played the anchor role of the chase. Ultimately, 10 runs were needed off the last over and then 9 off the final two deliveries. Godwin pulled Harwood to midwicket for a boundary, raising his hundred and setting the equation at 5 off 1 ball.

Charging down the track at the final ball, Godwin smacked an attempted yorker high and hard down the ground, only to see it bounce once and cross the rope.

With Tasmania's bowlers, in good form, and the team being up against a strong Karachi outfit, Canning was swapped for Rudolph, to bolster the batting.

Karachi batted first and Tasmania did well to restrict the strong Karachi batting line-up to 274, with no-one standing out but Khan(52), Cooke (49) and Manhus (49), all doing well in the middle order. Spinner Sharma (3-55) and Sammels (2-43) were the pick of the bowlers.

Tasmania's batting in their first innings was, for all except Jamie Midlane. Midlane took the bowling apart, and if anyone else gave him significant support, Tasmania could have a built a big lead. Only Symonds (21) and Goodwin (20), gave any real support, but this was not to last very long. Silva ran through the tail to leave Tasmania on 242 and Midlane was stranded on 134*.

Karachi stumbled to 49-3, but as in the first innings Khan (58) and Manhus (41) guided them to a decent total of 209. Sammels and Sharma again were the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 wickets apiece.

242 was the target for Tasmania, more than gettable on a wicket that was still decent enough. After Sami dismissed Rowell after 3 balls, Kaye took 3 wickets and Gordon Banks ran himself out to leave Tasmania at 79-5. Andrew Symonds started to play well, and he gained support from Ruodlph (28) and Sharma (29), who were scoring at a decent rate. But after Sami claimed the wicket of Sharma, the tail were knocked over. Tasmania totalled 223, a loss of 18 runs.

Karachi first innings:
274 all out.
B Khan 52, J Cooke 49, M Manhus 47. J Sharma 3-55, U Sammels 2-43, Rice 2-51.
Tasmania first innings:
242 all out
J Midlane 134*, A Symonds 21, M Goodwin 20. R Silva 5-58, Matthie 2-36, Kaye 1-18.
Karachi second innings:
209 all out
B Khan 58, M Manhus 40 , R Silva 41. U Sammels 3-71, J Sharma 3-41, F Akram 2-42.
Tasmania second innings
223 all out
A Symonds 65*, J Sharma 29, J Rudolph 28. A Mishra 3-32, W Kaye 3-41, M Sami 2-91.
Karachi win by 18 runs

Manager's comment." It was a decent all round performance in a close match, but if any more of our batsmen stepped up we could have won quite easily here and that really frustrates me. But with Victoria drawing we still have a good chance of reaching the play-offs."

Northerns get over the line in 2nd innings fight

Batting first Northerns strugglend and made just 186 after at 1 stage being 5/55, Dawson playing his first 4 day game for the year made a valuable 72 when all other batsmen failed as the Chitagong bowlers got on top with the wickets being shared by there bowlers. It was then Northerns who fought back into the game bowling Chittagong out for 188 just 2 ahead of Northerns terrible scores, Pointer was the pick of the bowlers taking 4/49 while all the other bowlers chimed in Khan 2/56, Shah 3/38 and Anjum 1/38 for Chittagong noone really made any significant score.

Going into the 2nd innings 2 runs behind the Northerns batters needed to produce and they did making 365. A 2nd wicket partnership between Rudolph and Gavasker of 147 was the catalyst to a much improved 2nd innings by the Northerns batsmen. Gavasker top scored with 86 while Rudolph made 80 while many other batsmen got starts but just couldnt produce. For the Chittangong bowlers Walker was the pick of the bowlers taking 4/70.

Needing 363 runs to win Chittagong made a solid start making 42 runs before Pointer got through Hurley's defence and bowled him for 18 runs. The next partnership looked like a match winning partnership of 103 between Abedin (84) and Indulker (49) before Chittagong colapsed to be all out for 250. Khan took 5 wickets to guide Northerns to Victory. Overall Northerns were satisfied with the win but admitted there was alot of improvement left in them and they will need to despite sitting pretty at the top of Division 6 in 4 day.

Northerns now look forward to getting there one day season back on track by winning there next match against the bottom of the table Galle. Another win could set Northerns back on track. The next game in 4 day is again against cellar dweller Galle but Northerns manager MikeW will not be taking the game easy although hinting at giving a couple of players a rest to give some other players a chance to impress.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Yorkshire win by default.

Yorkshire picked up points after Karnataka's forfeit in the four day round.
Yorkshire's new manager, G. Thomas, is already focused on the one day round.

(Sorry I couldn't think of much to write)

Well ACT sent Manager Brendon Goff off to Nauru on a good note...

After struggling early on to a dissapointing 201 we fought well with the ball to only give up a 46 run lead... However all went pair shaped in our second dig as we slumped to 8/195 however Tamhane and Newlands stepped up and fought like never before... Tahmane scored a brilliant unbeaten ton to get us to 316...

Then again the bowlers stepped up, Somerset slumping to 3/2 and then 5/45 and were never in the hunt, eventually bowled out for 200...

A great win which puts us in a beautiful possie...

Back on track for Province

After a dissapointing fortnight of results, Western Province, led by Eddy Tate have rejoined the front runners in the division 2 race. The battle was always going to be close as the traditional deteriorating Mumbai pitch effected the match more than the play itself. Province were fortunate enough to get first use of the strip with the bat, however their plans were halted by sloppy batting from the top order. The woes continued for Provinces' top order as Ghambir hit wicket, Llewellyn was involved in a running mix up, and Birch was dubiously given out LBW. Funston however remained strong as Mumbai looked to strike, as he knocked up another 50 before Tait got the better of him. Unlike in other matches where the Province batting depth has saved them, the South Africans were only able to manage 209, and with that Mumbai were able to take the front.

Mumbai survived the end of the first day for the loss of 1 wicket with the score on 40. Patel then came out like a man possessed the next day as he bullied his way to 108, in what would be easily the highest score in the match. Halfway through the day however the Mumbai pitch started playing up, giving Province a chance of reeling Mumbai back in and Kumble jumped at the opportunity, helping to clean the tail up as 6 wicket fell for just 47 runs, and Mumbai only managed 272.

The lead however on this pitch would prove to be plenty. Chugati and Tait bowled superbly as they fired out the Province top order and left them wrangling at 3-37, still some 10 runs short. However the next couple of sessions is where Mumbai lost the match. They failed to put the killer touch on as they dropped catches and fielded poorly. This time the Province middle order showed it's class with Friend, Jacobs, Schofield and Samaraweera all making valuable contributions in the context of the game and on this pitch. Province managed to muscle their way up to 244 setting Mumbai 183 to win the match.

Mumbai began well however as the dangerous Patel once again looked like carrying his side over the line. Mumbai were looking good at 3-125, just some 50 runs short of victory, but once again the desire and heart of the Province bowling line up got them home, this time on the back of Ed Tate. Tate destroyed the Mumbai middle order and tail with a fiery spell of fast bowling. There were times that Mumbai looked that they would scrape home however Tate would put an end to that by ripping out stumps, or getting edges. The nerves could be seen on the faces of the last few Mumbai batsman and the ball got the better as Province snuck home by 2 runs, with Tate finishing with 7-45.

The match could've gone either way, and critics will still be asking major questions as to the form and ability of the Province top order, who once again failed on both occasions. However the bottom line is that the side has won the most games out of any of the division 2 sides, and are looking like serious promotion contenders.

nsw got the points against 2nd standing wa, with a hard fought win which could have went either way. few stand outs where q moore with the ball and a good solid 2nd innings from kallis seen nsw get by with 5 wickets. that win gets nsw of the bottom of the 4 day table with efforts really need to keep the momentum going.

Coach_Pearson

First Class Debutant
Victoria played host to Auckland this weekend, and both sides struggling in division 4, with less than par bowling attacks. Victoria batted first, and it was openers Mike Hussey (87) and Matthew Elliott (152) who got the Bushrangers off to a fantastic start. But when Tutor broke the 185 run opening stand the rudder began to fall off a little until Skipper Moss and Kade (No I’m not Ian’s Brother) Harvey rescued the shipped, and steered it towards 485 a/o.

Auckland were determined to match the effort and played very positive cricket against a lack-lust Victorian attack. Godwin and Burley both racking up tons, as Harwood struggled to have any impact on what could only be described as a road of a pitch, Auckland finishing 22 runs behind.

Elliott could not repeat his performance in the second innings and was the first to go, as Victoria aimed to set a target. Alex Tutor had all the answers to the Vic’s middle order, and by bowling to a well though-out plan had the Victoria’s unable to build a big total. The last of his 5 wickets was Skipper Jon Moss, who was so p*ss off with been given LBW, soon declared the innings closed with 61 overs to play.

Auckland set 238 to win had the job in front of them, but the Victorians failed to play as a team, and soon started fighting with each other, as it became clear that no-one was happy with Moss’s decision. The runs continued to pile on, until it was down to the last over and 10 runs to win. A dramatic draw was all the Bushrangers could salvage, after what started like the “Australia II” finished as the Titanic. Coach Pearson stood down Moss as Victorian Skipper after the match, and there is hope that the Bushrangers travel to Auckland as a team, and keep their one-day season in tact.

I will also be looking forward to catching up with Mr Mxyzptlk for a couple more beers after the match.
