It's luck in whether it works well or not. Success isn't guaranteed in cricket, so whether it's a good plan or not is only really noticed by people in hindsight, regardless of what went into it earlier. And besides, there's not much that can be done nowadays to say that X captain has innovated something gamechanging that isn't already been noticed and highlighted by staff/players, so this would only favour the pioneers who had the fortune of having the talent and conditions necessary to pull off such innovations.

Captaincy much more than just on-field tactics though.

Perhaps in the spirit of this thread, an astute tactician is a master captain but one who revolutionises his side or the game a genius.

Bradman was definitely a genius. Nobody else has ever come close to his success with a golf ball, stump and water tank. Seriously why aren’t we training our young batsmen like this???

Yeah as a personal preference when it is hard to split players who are more or less equal.
