Actually, in terms of crowds it was popular well before the Ashes.

I've been going to the Old Trafford Test every year since 2002 (except for 2005 because of the stupid pricing), and it's been a sell out every time - those have been on different days each game as well.

I think the focus shouldn't be on hopes of america and china,do the coaching and promotion but give international status to teams that are deserving.
Look at afghanistan and the way they are taking to cricket or nepal where it is the national sport.
Countries like holland and canada will never be test nations where as scotland and ireland might.
First america has to get back in the icc as they are suspended at the moment,2nd they have the comps but america is likely to enthuse about cricket as much as it does the american eagles in rugby, not much.It could alos be the case of china but i see china as a long term player.
The icc has plans but individual countries have to do more feel australia could do heaps more to help the associate nations.Where do minnow countries usually tour and play against the answer is usually asia or south africa.
Neither kenya or any of the 5 associate nations have visitted australia or ever been invited.
So some countries need to do more to help development australia mainly helps the pacfic and south east asia and thats it.
Namibia, scotland, ireland, afghnaistan and nepal should be the next targets of development of cricket not china or america.
The cricket market is already big i don't see how bending over backwards is going to hurry up countries like america or china.

It would be very hard for advertising to get you say 10,000 people to watch an ODI between the Nethlerands and Scotland, there just isn't the interest really. Even if it was marketed very well and the prices were cheap the people's interest isn't as high as it needs to be.
if say 10000 seats wont sell than even after all trying real hard than small stadiums (seats wise) should be used atleast it wont look as bad then...

Which then requires a much bigger outlay to get the stadiums fit for hosting International games - is that really worth it?

I'd say lets play some games in afghanistan, nepal and china.America has had games before and have games planed for the future.
I betya if you had an international game in aghnaistan or nepal you would get a big crowd, rather than america where just expats go and expats play.

well not prepare one for them but put them in a one stadium with the least seats there is availble ...
