Yeah, that is the impression I had as well, especially off the spinners. He'd often flick it over midwicket.

Personally I find Martyn prettier to watch than Mark Waugh (who's no ugly duckling himself). But Martyn's shotmaking is just gorgeous. One criticism you could make of Waugh's batting from the aesthetic sense was that he didn't seem to hit down the ground that much.
MW's shots square of the wicket were just awesome to watch......his cover drive was out of this world

I haven't seen the likes of Peter May. But Zaheer Abbas? Barry Richards? Gundappa Viswanath? To name just three among those I have been privileged to watch.
Was lucky enough to have watched all of those as well, still thought MW the better to watch:)

The on-drive, his most notable shot, aside, of course.
Can we have vision of him hitting DV down the ground for six, maybe the best bit of pure timing I ever saw:-O

Martyn, comfortably my favourite Australian batsmen to watch after Ponting, and his series in India 2004 was nothing short of sensational. Personally don't have that many fond memories of Waugh's batting.

Considering this poll has not gone to plan (to be a competitive one) I would like to know who people view as an equivalent to Damien Martyn's quality as a batsman? It could be a past player or one currently playing.

I think Mark Waugh prevented a lot of better players from playing in his place (Darren Lehmann for one and even Damien Martyn for another). Not that he wasnt a good player, but quite honestly he was fortunate to have played 128 test matches for Australia while just being 'good enough' given the kind of talent that was available in the sheffield shield at the time.
